UNITED JOOST DE BRUINLOF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ATTACHMENT FOR IVIATCH-SAFES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1909.
Application filed January 25, 1909. Serial No. 473,972.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Joos'r DE BRUIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in attachments for match safes or holders, and more particularly to the type in which a box of matches may be placed and from which the matches will be automatically fed to a point of discharge to prevent waste or loss of matches, and the primar) object of the invention is to provide an improved attachment for the safe to form a receptacle for burned matches within the safe.
A further object is to provide an improved attachment of this character which may be readily inserted and removed and which will protect the matches and at the same time form a choke or obstruction for the matches adjacent the delivery opening to prevent the matches from being too freely discharged.
A further object is to provide an improved attachment of this character adapted to be inserted within the safe and which is provided with a portion projecting beyond the safe for the reception of advertising matter, announcements, or the like.
A further object is to provide an improved device of this character' which will be simple, durable, cheap and compact in construction, and effective and efficient in operation.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other' new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists of the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing, illustrating an exem plification of the invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a. match safe having an attachment applied thereto constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2--2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one form of the burned match receptacle removed from the match safe. Fig. a is a detail perspective view of another form of receptacle.
Referring .more particularly to the drawing, the numeral designates generally a match safe which may be constructed of any suitable material and of any desired size and configuration, preferably having a front, rear, and side walls. The top of the safe thus formed is preferably open and the bottom is closed as at 11. A portion of the front wall 12 of the safe is cut-away to form a discharge outlet or delivery opening 13 and the wall adjacent the cut-away portion is preferably deflected as at 14 inwardly toward the rear wall 15 of the safe. The portion of the safe below the cut-away portion 13 forms a tray or receptacle designated generally by the reference numeral 16 into which the matches are delivered from the box 17. A portion of the back 15 of the safe may be cut out and deflected as at 1S to form a support by means of which the box may be suspended. The box 17, `containing the matches 19, after having the cover or a portion thereof removed, is inserted into the safe with the open side toward the front wall 12 thereof. The match safe is of a size greater than the height of the box 17 so as to form a space between the top edges of the walls of the box and the front wall 12 of the safe when the bottom of the box rests against the rear wall 15 of the safe.
A suitable receptacle which may be constructed of any desired or suitable material and bent to form spaced walls 20, 21, and a bottom 22 is provided and is adapted to be inserted into the space between the top edge of the box 17 and the front wall 12 of the safe. The upper extremities of the walls 20, 21, are respectively deflected laterally as at 23, 24, to form projecting flanges so that when the receptacle thus formed is inserted within the match safe, one of the flanges will rest upon the top wall of the box 17 and the other flange will rest upon the top edge of the front wall 12. This receptacle is preferably of a width to substantially fill the space into which it is inserted and is preferably opened at its ends so that the side walls of the match safe will form closures for the ends, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture of the receptacle or attachment. A portion of the front wall of the receptacle is deflected as at 25 adjacent the bottom 22 to form an inclined face extending rearwardly toward the wall 21 vand the receptacle is preferably of such a length that the bottom thereof will extend inclose proxdescribed; but
imity to the delivery opening 13 of the safe,
thereby forming a choke or obstruction for the matches 19 to prevent them from being delivered too freely into the tray formed by the portion 1G at the delivery outlet. The inclined portion 25 of the front Wall of the receptacle is adapted to rest against the inclined or deflected portions 14 of the front Wall. With this improved attachment it will be apparent that when the cover of the match box 17 is removed, the adjacent Wall 21 of the receptacle Will cooperate with the box to form a closure therefor and at the same time protect the `matches to prevent them from becoming damaged when a lighted or a hot match is dropped into the burned match receptacle.
Gbviously the receptacle may be of a length to terminate short of the delivery opening 13, the primary object of the invention being to provide a removable burned match receptacle, which is located Within the match safe. It. is also to be understood that the matches 19 may be placed in the receptacle Without the box 17, and in this event and if the receptacle is to be so used, one ofthe ianges may be increased in length so as to rest upon the rear Wall 15 of the match safe to assist in supporting the receptacle.
When it is desired to empty the burned match receptacle all that is necessary is to remove the receptacle and empty the same,
after Which it may be replaced in the safe.
In order to prevent the matches from becoming displaced While emptying the receptacle, and in order to facilitate the replacing of the receptacle, the match safe may be laid flat upon the rear Wall 15.
In the modification of the invention shown in Fig. 3, the receptacle comprises the front and rear Walls 26, 27, having a bottom 28 and being provided With the inclined portion 29 forming a continuation of the Wall 26. A liange 30, similar to the flange 24:, is provided on the rear Wall 27. The front. Wall 26 is provided with an olfset portion 31 to form a iiange or shoulder adapted'to rest upon the top edge of the front Wall 12 of the safe similar to the flange 23, and the Wall is provided With an extension 32 which projects for any desired distance beyond the iiange or shoulder 31 and extends beyond the top edge of the safe and is adapted to receive advertising matter, announcements, illustrations or the like. This form of receptacle may be removed and inserted in the same manner and is provided with open sides Which are adapted to be closed by the side Walls of the safe.
In order that the invention'might be fully understood, the details of the foregoin embodiment thereof have been thus speci cally 1.'The combination of a match holde having an opening through which the` matches are delivered, and a burned match receptacle Within and fixed with respect to the holder, said receptacle serving to guide the matches to the delivery opening.
