Description

IUNTTnn STATES PATENT Ottica,
VASHINGTON F. PAGETT AND SILAS H. GARD, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN GARDEN-Hows.
Speciliralion forming part of Letters Patent No. QLJBL dated August 3l, 15h39.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, IV. F. PAGETT and S. H. GARD, of Springfield, in the county of Clark and State ot' Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Garden-Plow; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionv ofthe construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part oi' this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view showing the left side. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the right side. Fig. 3 is a section through line x c ot' Fig. 2.
The object of this invention is to provide for public use a simple and easily-adjustable instrument to be propelled byhand, which shall answer the purpose of a garden plow or scraper.
In the drawings, H Hindicate the handles or ribs, they being attached to a cross-bar, I, at the top ot' an inclined beam, A.
IJ is the shovel fastened by screw-bolts or other adequate means upon a castiron foundation, C, near its lower end.
\V is a wheel connected to foundation Cby an arm, E, pivoted at e, and made verticallyadjustable by means of a curved slot, e, inthe end oi` the arm, and a screw-nut, n, on a bolt, d, passing through the foundation-plate, as shown in Fig. l.
D is a scraper attached to the foundation by the transverse bolt d, and capable of being vertically adjusted by a screw-nut, n', on the side of the plate C, oppositie to that on which the nut n works. The part A is pivotcd to the part C by means of the bolt d and a guard or chater, F, which holds said part A by having its edges bent over the edges thereof, and by means of the bolt d and a bolt, h, shown in Fig. 2. The upper end of the foundation-plate is formed into the segment of a circle, notched or corrugated along its lateral edge, as shown at m, Fig. l.
II is a hook or clamp on the left end of bolt 7i, fitting into the notches on` m, and capable of being clamped, so as to hold the part C firmly in position by tightening the nut of on the right side of the beam, its object being to enable the parts AC to be adjusted in different positions with relation to each other, and to be fixed in any desired position. The wheel It runs on a round spindle, s, the inner end of which, at t, is square and tits into a square or oblong gain in the side of the part c, shown in Fig. 3,
so that the spindle cannot turn with the wheel. A bolt, i, extends through the spindle, and is provided at one end with a head, i', and at the other with a screw-nut, i, between which and the right side of wheel R is a washer, i. The bolt passes through a vertical slot, r, in lug c, so that the wheel can be adjusted higher or lower by clamping its spindle in different positions by means of the nut The wheel XV may also be adjusted in different positions in the arm E, a slot, a, being made for that purpose.
Ve do not limit ourselves to any particular size of the above-dcscribed parts, nor to any particular material in constructing them. In general, however, it will be better to make the parts A I H, &c., of wood, and the parts F C D P of iron, the parts I R being of either material, at pleasure. rI`he part C will also preferably be made about nine inches long by one-fourth inch thick, varied, however, to suit different attachments, a eountersink be ing made to receive the upper end of plow I), and a portion of it (shown at v /v c o o) being cast thicker than the rest, in order to give it proper strength, and to give at the same time an adequate support to the other parts. The arm E may be bent outward laterally, at a point nearly opposite the upper end of the plow, so as to hold the wheel XV off to the left of the plow. Then thus made, by simply turning the arm over and fastening it with its other side next to the part C, the wheel can be adjusted so as to travel directlyin front of the center of the plow; and, still further, by taking oft' the arm and fastening it on the right side of the foundation instead of the left, as before, the wheel can be thrown to the right of the plow, this simple expedient enabling the wheel to be thus adjusted in any position, at pleasure.
The wheel R is preferably about live inches in diameter, and the wheel W about eighteen inches. The plow l) is about eight inches long by from two and one-half to four inches wide, and of the usual curve. The scraper D is from three to five inches long and one-sixteenth ot' an inch thick; the beam A, about four feet long; the cross-bar I, abouttwentytwo inches, and the chater F about tive inches.
Having thus described our invent-ion, what we claim as new, and desi re to secure by Letters Patent, is-
constructed as described, and as specifically shown in Fig. 3, and for the purposeset forth.
