Description

(No Model.)
G. H. BLACK.
HAND GULTIVATOR.
No. 349,561. Patented Sept. 21, 1886.
I INVENTOR Zap/6732M? WITNESSES KW,
N PETERS. Phomumo n hr, Wmhingiom 0.0.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE f GEORGE H. BLACK, OF BUCHANAN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO DAVID V. PIERCE, OF SAME PLACE.
HAND-CULTIVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349.561, dated September 21. 1885- Application filed March 29, 1886. Serial No. 196,969. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BLACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buchanan, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Cultivators; and I do declarerthe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective view. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detail perspective views.
This invention has relation to hand-cultivators; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the transverse wooden handle, and B B are the iron shaft-bars, which are connected at their forward and lower ends by the journal-bolt a, on which the supporting-wheel C revolves. These shaft-irons are flattened from side to side, and extend backward parallel to each other and at-a low angle of inclination from the journal a to the bends b, where the irons diverge gradually as they extend upward and rearward at a higher angle of inclination. \Vheu in use, the lower portions of the shaft-irons are level, or nearly so. At their upper ends the shaftirons are provided with lateral flanges c, which are perforated for the passage of the bolts d, whereby they are secured to the under side of the handle, the latter also being provided with perforations for the reception of the fastening -bolts. These perforations are made through the square bearing-faces e,which are formed on the under side of the handle, the main portions of which are, however, turned round in order to facilitate handling.
- Just below the bends I) of the shaft-irons are made in the same the perforations g and 71, which are about three inches apart in each iron, being designed for the passage of the transversebolts 7;, which also pass through the blocks D D and the inclined upper portion, E, of the standard F, said portion projecting forward and downward at the same inclination with that of the lower portions of the shaft-irons. The blocks D D are located inside the shaft-irons, one on each side of the hub being of proper size to fitbetween the shaft-irons.
The wooden blocks D D act as washers to hold the iron shovel-standard F in central posit-ion, so that it will follow the wheel truly, and at the same time these blocks serve to spread the shaft-irons and hold them firmly at the proper distance apart for the hub to work easily and truly between them.
The shovel-sleeve G is designed to embrace the lower end of the standard, and is provided with perforations for the fastening-bolts. Its lower portion is recessed in concave form from side to side to receive the shovel-back H, to which is attached the shovel K by the bolt m. The shovel-back is adjustable in the concave of the sleeve to enable the shovel to be adjusted as desired.
The shovel K is made long-about sixteen inches in length-and is formed at one end with a common shovel, and at the other end it is made in bull-tongue shape.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The improved hand-cultivator herein de scribed, consisting of the bent shaft irons parallel in their lower portions and diverging in their upper portions, which are inclined at a higher angle than said'lower pertions, and provided with lateral end flanges, In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein the wooden handle secured to the said flanges, presence of two witnesses. the wooden Washer-blocks interposed between the bases of the diverging portions of the shaft- GEO. H. BLACK. 5 irons, the standard secured between the washer-blocks, and the wheel journaled between Witnesses: the outer ends of the parallel shaft-irons, snb- A. F. Ross, stantially as specified.
