Description
llhritrd tatra anni deities.
Letters Patent No. 94,432, dated August 31, 41869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and'making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern .said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is an elevation of the engraving-types on one side ofthe transfer-roller;
Figure 2 is an elevation ofthe transfer-roller, at the opposite side to the types;
Figure 3 represents one portion of the transferroller, with the types in place; and
Figure 4 is a section of the roller 4and types, at the line xx, gs. l, 2, and 3.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts. The object of this invention is to facilitate the engraving of metallic plates, with letters or figures of more or less ornamentaifcharacter, by the transferprocess.
To effect this, I make use of hardened movable steel-types, with the letter or figure at the end, and fitted accurately, so that several such types can be set together in a cylinder or roller,- to compose the name or characters to be transferred to the plate.
This method of transfer is to be distinguished from that heretofore resorted to, in which the nameofa bank, or of an individual, or a group of characters, has been formed in a plate, and then transferred as a whole upon the surface of a roller, and,'from that, retransferred to the plate, in the proeessof engraving.
' My improvement dispenses with engraving the en.- tire name or group of characters, and allows the same to be composed in-a manner similar to the setting-up of types.
Hence, only an alphabet or set of characters has to -be engraved in the beginning, and from the same,
when hardened, any desired number of separate types can be obtained.
The original plate, with the letter or character engraved thereon, and afterwards hardened,'can be preserved, and employed in making any desired number of types, by transferring the engraving to the end of such types.
The letters or characters heretofore engraved, have either been cut into the surface of the p1ate,"so as t0 print wholly or partially with ink, or said letters have been left, and the surrounding surface has been cut away, more or less, or formed with lines, so that, in
the printing, the letter itself will appear white, or nearly so.
In making use of my improvement, any kind of letter or character may be employed that can be transferred.
My invention is especially designed to facilitate the engraving of names on, plates of steel, copper, or other met-al for printing, andmy improvement can be ernployed in making name or number-plates. In Ythe first-named instance, the letters on the types will be found to read from left to right. In the last-named instance, the letters on the types will be reversed; and, I remark that the letters or characters themselves may be of any desired kind, according to the use to which they are tobe put.
In the drawinga is the shaft ofthe transfer-roller, upon which is a collar, 2, and nut, b, for compressing the heads c and d, and clamping the types e between them.
The heads c cl are made with projecting ribs, 3 and 4, either square, as shown, or V-shaped, andthe types are made with corresponding grooves.
Two sides of each type are parallel, or nearly so, and-.the other two are in the plane of the radius of the cylinder, and the bases of the types sit upon the cylindrical portion 5 ofthe transfer-rollerL In order to press the separate types to each other, and hold them firmly in the direction of .the line of types, I make use of the blocks f and g, and these are attached to the respective heads o d, and ascrew, li, upon a stud that is aixed to the head c, is employed to act against the other block g and head c, to force said block firmly against the end of the line of types.
A pair of levers, with claws at the end, entering holes in the outer sides ofthe heads c d, may be employed to give a partial rotation to said heads, and thereby force the types firmly together.
The types and roller are to be employed in a suitable press, and transferred to the plate by rolling, as usual.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-v `hold the same, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this 14th day of July, 1869.
ROBERT NEALE.
