ton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oven- Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to inake and use the same.
Thls invention relatesto improvements in domestic ovens and-more particularly to an improved door therefor,--the same being applicable for the ovens of cooking ranges, gas-stoves and portable ovens.
The object of my present invention is to provide an oven door having a transparent panel therein, which latter shall be so supported and connected with the door frame as not to be liable to breakage on account of. unequal expansion and contraction of the main1 frame of the door. and the transparent ane - j-I A further object is to so support a glass panel in an ov en door without the use of asbestos or similar packing and yet prevent breakage of the glass on account of changing degrees of heat to which it may be subjected.
\Vith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts" as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a door embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is, a rear view with the rear plate removed. Fi 3 is a trans-o verse sectional view. Fig. 4 1s a detail view of one ofthe holding strips for the glass panel, and Fig. 5 is a modification.
1 represents the main frame of the door and consists of a casting provided at its lower corners with pintles, 2 by means of which the door can be hinged to the front plate of an oven. In order that this frame shall present a pleasing appearance its outer surface may be convexed between the corner portions and preferably coated or plated with some bright metal or otherwise polished. The upper member of the frame 1 is :made intermediate of its length with an enlarged portion 3 which forms a seat for a bracketd and this bracket carries a suitable latch 5 and a handle 6 to operate said latch and to mani ulate the door.
The rear ace of the frame 1 is provided sheet metal) are disposed near the corners and also at intermediate points with bosses 7 having threaded sockets 8 for the reception of screws, and said bosses may be connected by strengthening ribs 9. The inner edges of the frame 1 constitute, on the rear face of said frame, ledges or seats 10 for a sheet metal frame 11. The external dimensions of this frame 11 are appreciably greater than the internal dimensions of the frame 1, but the internal dimensions of the frame 11 are considerably less than the internal dimensions of the frame 1 so that when the frame 11 is in position against the back of the frame 1, a considerable portion of said frame 11 will appear within the frame 1 when the latter is viewed from the front. The bosses 7 intermediate of the corners of the frame 1 will serve to prevent displacement of the frame 11. The frame 11 is provided at its outer edges with flanges l2 and at the inner edges of said frame, a seat is provided for a-glass panel 13. Between the edges of the glass panel 13 and the flanges 12 at the outer ed 'es of the frame 11, spacing strips 14 (preferably of and each of these spacing strips is provided at both of its longitudinal edges with flanges 15 which are of' such depth that when the strips are.
placed in position, the upper edges of said flanges .will be substantially flush with the upper edges of the flanges 12 and the upper or rear face of the glass panel.
A sheet metal rear frame 16 is placed on the bosses 7- 0f the frame 1 and covers the frame 11, the spacing strips and the edges of the glass panel. The rear frame plate 16 is secured in place by means of scr ews 17 which pass through suitable holes m sa d plates and enter the threaded sockets 8 m the bosses 7. With this construct1on, 1t will be observed that the glass panel is supported and held in position between two sheet metal frames and that said glass panel makes no contact with the casting which composes the main frame 1. It has been demonstrated that with such construction,
all danger of breakage-ofthe glass panel on account of unequal expansion and contraction of the holding frame and the glass, Wlll be avoided, and 1t is believed. that this is lar ely due to the fact. that the expansion an contraction ofthe sheet metal frames will be practically. equal to; that.- of the glass panel, Two or more rods 18 are 59-,

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
-1. In an oven door, the combination with metal frames secured to the rear side of the main frame, one of said sheet metal frames being located between said lugs. and against said seats ofthe main frame, and a transparent panel having its edges confined between said sheet metal frames and without contact with the cast metal frame, said sheet metal frames constituting the sole attaching means of the transparent panel tothe cast metal main frame and separating the transparent panel from contact with the said mainframe.
2; In an oven door, the combination with a main frame, of a sheet metal frame seated against the rear face of the main frame and provided at its edges with flanges, a transparent panel seated against the rear face of a the sheet metal frame, spacing strips disposed between the edges of the transparent panel and the flanges of said sheet metal frame, and a rear frame .plate covering the edges of the transparent panel, the spacing.

means around the edges of the glass panelfor holding said glass panel against displacement, a rear fra'me plate covering the edges of the glass panel and the sheet metal frame, rods extending across the opening of said frame plate and the glass panel in said opening, and fastening devices securing said frame plate and said-rods to bosses of themain frame.
