UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ULYSSES S. DE MOULIN, OF GREENVILLE, ILLINOIS.
INITIATION DEVICE.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ULYssEs S. DE MOULIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Bond and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Initiation Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to initiation devices of the vehicle type, the object of the invention being to provide a vehicle on which the initiate is to be placed, that portion of the vehicle constituting the seat being in the form of a goat or other animal and being so mounted as to subject the rider to an eccentric movement tending to confuse him and rendering the position difficult to maintain.
Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the power-transmitting mechanism. Fig. 3 is a view partly in section and partly in perspective of the supporting bar and its upper bearing.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the base frame of the machine, said frame being of any suitable shape and being mounted at its front end upon a caster 2, while its rear portion has a shaft 3 extending therethrough and supported by wheels 4:. The hubs of these wheels are arranged off center as indicated at 5, so that when the frame is moved either backwardly or forwardly, an irregular lateral swaying movement is imparted thereto, the eccentricity of such movement being increased by arranging the hubs 5 of the two wheels 4f out of horizontal alinement.
A cross-strip 6 is secured upon the frame 1 and extending therethrough is ournaled a short shaft 8 having a beveled gear 9 at its lower end. This gear meshes with the beveled gear 10 secured to an intermediate shaft 11 which is journaled in the frame 1. A gear 12 is secured to the shaft 11 and receives motion from a gear 13 secured to the main shaft 3. It will be apparent therefore that when the wheels a and shaft 3 are rotated Specification of Letters Patent.

motion will be transmitted therefrom through the gears 13 and 12 to shaft 11, and from shaft 11 through gears 10 and 9 to the shaft 8. This last mentioned shaft has an arm 14 extending at right angles therefrom and on which is swiveled the lower end of a supporting rod 15, the upper end of which is secured to a seat 16 preferably in the form of the body of a goat or other animal, there being straps 17 extending downwardly from the figure and carrying stirrups 1S. The rod 15 extends through a ring 19 secured to the upper ends of supporting rods 20 fastened to the cross strip G and to the front portion of the frame 1, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 3 the rod 15 is mounted to rock in all directions upon a bolt 21 extending through an opening 22 in ring 19, and which serves to secure the side rods 20 and the ring 19 together. The center of ring 19 is disposed in vertical alinement with shaft S. A handle 23 extends rearwardly from the frame 1 and is suitably braced as indicated, said handle being providedjvith grips 241, whereby it can be readily held and manipulated.
In using the device herein described the initiate is blindfolded and placed upon the seat 16 with his feet in the stirrups 18. The machine is then pushed forward, and, inasmuch as the hubs 5 are arranged eccentrically with relation to the rims of the wheels, it will be obvious that the entire machine will be swayed from side to side and from front to rear. The wheels 4: are preferably revoluble independently of each other and therefore this rocking movement is not produced with any degree of regularity. In addition to the bodily movement of the machine such as herein mentioned, motion is transmitted from the gear 13 through the mechanism described to the shaft 8, thus causing the arm 14 to swing in a circle, a corresponding movement being imparted to the lower end of the rod 15. The upper end of the rod and the seat carried thereby will thus be given a corresponding movement, the degree 'of which will be dependent upon the distance of the seat from the fixed pivot 19. It will be noted that the head of the figure constituting the seat is always maintained to the front of the machine, but, in view of the eccentric movement imparted to the seat, it will be extremely diiicult for the initiate to maintain his position, especially should he be blindfolded.
1t is of course to be understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departi ng from the spirit or sacricing the advantages of the invention.
