Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 19, 1914. Serial No. 839,611.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to toys, and more particularly to that class of mechanical toys which are to be pulled or advanced over a floor or surface, and has for an object to provide a toy of a simple construction in which certain parts are moved or operated upon advancing the toy over a floor or surface.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a toy which may include a body having the configuration of a horse and which is provided with movable legs and suitable mechanism whereby the same will be actuated when the toy is advanced over a floor or surface, means being also provided for guiding the toy as it is advanced over the floor or surface.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the toy; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through the toy; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional View; Fig. 4: is a fragmentary plan view of a portion of the guiding structure, a fragmentary portion of the body being shown in section, with the guiding rod also shown in section. Fig. 5 is a top plan view.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a platform 10, on the under side of which is journaled a shaft 11 having wheels 12 thereon. The medial portion of the shaft carries a toothed wheel 13 of a smaller diameter than the wheels 12 and which latter wheels are adapted to operate over a surface or floor. A plurality of standards 14 are secured on the top face of the platform to support a body 15 having the configuration of a horse, the upper ends of the standards being spaced apart to support the body therebetween. A double crank shaft 16 is journaled on the standards 14 and keyed to the crank shaft is a toothed wheel 17 which lies between the standards. A shaft 18 is journaled on the under side of the platform and keyed thereto are a plurality of spaced toothed wheels 19 over one of which passes a belt 20 and which belt also passes over the toothed wheel 13. A second belt 21 passes over the other toothed wheel 19 and over the toothed wheel 17. Thus it will be seen that when the platform is advanced over the floor the rotation of the wheels 12 will impart rotation to the toothed wheel 13, thus through the medium of the belt rotating the shaft 18 and through the medium of the second belt 21 operating the crank shaft 16.
Rigidly secured to the front end of the platform is a bearing strap 2 1 on which is journaled a vertical rod 25 having its lower end bifurcated to revolubly support a free wheel 26, the upper end of the rod 25 being swiveled in the front or head end of the body 15. Secured to the rod adjacent its upper end is a U-shaped member 27, somewhat in the nature of a yoke, and mounted to swing horizontally on the body 15 on an upright 15 thereon is a cross piece 28 having cords 29 connected to its ends, with the said cords connecting with the ends of the U-shaped member 27 so that when the cross piece 28 is actuated the free wheel 26 will be turned to guide the platform 10 in any desired direction as the platform is advanced over a floor or surface.
With a construction of the character described it will be apparent that a child, by placing his hand upon the saddle portion or medial part of the body 15, with his fingers touching the cross piece 28, can guide the device in any desired direction through the medium of the rod and free wheel carried.
thereby and the cords connecting the cross piece with the rod, while at the same time, when the device is advanced over the floor or surface the legs or movable parts of the body, which simulates a horse, will be actuated, as stated heretofore. If desirable, an apertured plate can be secured to the rod 25 for the purpose of attaching the cord to the plate and whereby a child pulling the toy can, by changing the angle of the cord, turn the free wheel so as to guide the device in any desired direction. The platform 10 preferably has an opening 31 therein and through which passes the belt 21, the toothed wheels 19 being arranged immediately beneath the opening as shown.
Although I have described my device as a toy it will be understood that it can be made large enough to be used as a riding horse and for this reason I provide suitable pedals 32 carried on the shaft 16 in the nature of cranks and connecting with the rods 23 so that when the shaft is rotated through the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the medium of the pedals the legs of the horse will be operated and correspondingly the vehicle will be advanced along the ground.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a device of the class described, a body having the configuration of a horse, a platform, spaced uprights for supporting said body to said platform, a shaft journaled to said platform, a second shaft lying between said uprights, a third shaft journaled on said platform, a belt connecting said third mentioned shaft with the first mentioned shaft, another belt connecting said second mentioned shaft with the said first men-' tioned shaft, operating members formed on the shaft lying between said uprights, and means connecting said operating members with the legs of the horse for operating the same as the platform advances.
