Description

E. GUNNBLL. ANTIDRIFTING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR, 5, 1909K 'entran ELIAS GUNNELL, OF MANTOWGC, VJISCONSXN, .Px-SSI CUMPANY, OF MANITOWOC, WESCNSISC', l Cif:
rgnal application filed. November 20, 1902', Serial No. a'lll.
Serial No. 5115-33.,"333.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ELIAS GUNNELL, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Manitowoc` in the county of Manitowoc and State of lViseonsin, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Antidrifting Devices, of whieh the following is a specification.
rThe invention relates to anti-drifting devices of the general typo Shown in my eopending application Serial Number 403,014-, of which the present application is a divi.- sion, the subject matter hereof being shown and described in such tro-pending application` The principal objects of the invention are the provision of a simple forni of device which may be easily and conveniently operA ated from the deekof the seow; the provision of sectional retarding means so that the device may be operated in part instead of as a whole il desired; and the provision ot a simple form of retarding device which may be utilized in controlling and steering the sc.o\v. .One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
`wherein Figure l is a aide elevation of the sono' a towing -tug attached thereto :Figure2 is a plan view of the seow,
Figure 2l is an enlarged longitudinal seetion through the end ot' the. scow,
Figure 4 is a transverse Section on the line lV -l V of Figure 3, and
lligure 5 is a ltransverse lsection through the. scow on the line V-V ot' Figure Q.
lteterring to the drawing, l is the scow which is ot the ordinary type and comprises a pair ol side portions or buoyant chambers 2 "f connected together by bulli-h ads and divisional walls Forming a pocket L (Figure 5), which extends lengthwise ot' the scow and into which the .material is to be dumped or loaded. llxtending the, entire length ot ther Iacow and intermediate the pontoona is the usual well 1, into which the material loaded in the. pontoous is liually dumped Specification of! Letters Patent.
'tv'ltded an ons @attention niet?. Mare l in Figures 3, and t., i; which time they en tend across the well ma ae? etarding; '.4.
ting levers 5 hltm'ling boxes 6 are provided in the bottom of Ythe seow in (irder to make a tight; vennoot-ion between such loot tom and the snails eti. lt vvill be understood that the tlaps at the rear end or the seow are piaceri in n )erative position when the Seo'w is ing ahead, and at this time the liaps at the ront. end of the scow are open or in inoperative position to permit 'the tree. passage. of water through the well 2, and when the. direction of movement of the seow is reversed the positions ot the tlaps at the ends are reversed.
lirom the Jforegoing it will be that a very simple and etlertive eonstruetion is provided.. rl`he abat s lul si: o the trouble inaction ot supporting and turning the laps 23443, and the use oi' entidad-some and expensive operai ing meehanism is thus avoided. Under certain conditions may be found that'v one oi the ilapsi will give the desired amoun' ot retardation. in which Case the other is lett folded. and an undue and unnecesarjtf amount otL resistance to the movement olf the .seow through the water is avoided. lt will also. be seen that by the use ot two llaps instead ol" a single one, the power neiessary to turn the tlaps to operative position when the seow is moving ahead is reduced. 'a'hieh arraagement'y lessens the labor in operation and reduces the wistinjY strain on the operating parts. lf desired the llaps M-:l may be operated after the manner olE ruthleren the distances ot the axes -l--l from the eenter line of the soow giving the tlaps a powert'ul steering effect when operated sipearatelv. 'lhe location ot the [laps C'l-f-l in the well l is also desirable? aa the).v are thus largelv surroumled by the body o'l the scow. and ilnotected lroiminjury due to 'obstructions or to the bottom olf the boat coming into contant with the surface over which thc ,scow passes.
ll'aving thus described my invention and i illustrated its uses, what I' claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patentis the following 1. The combination with a scoW having an open bottomed dumping Well extending `throughout its length, of an anti-drifting flap vhingedvon a vertical axis andlyng in the well, and means whereby the flapmay be held in a position transverse to the `Well. 3
ylhe combination with a scow having an open bottomed dumping well extending througgghouty its length, of an anti-drifting Hap hinged at the edge\of'the Well on a vertical operatingshaft and means for turninglthe flap to a position transverse to the wel 3. The combination with a Seow having an opened bottomed dumping Well extending throughout its length, ot an operating shaft extending from the deck of the scow to the well, and an anti-drifting flap mounted on the Shaft and lying in the well.
4. The combination with a seow having an open bottomed dumping well extending throughout its length, of a paix, of operating shafts extending from .the deck of the Vscoiv to opposite ,sides ofthe well, aml a retarding flap on each shaft. t
5. The combination with a seow having an open bottomed dumping well extending throughout its length, of anti-drifting'fiape hinged on vertial axes on opposi fidele of the nell -and ineans'ivhereby the ttaps'may be held in positions transverse to the well.
6. The combination with a`scow having an open bottomed dumping WellV extending throughout its length, of `a pair of anti* drifting flaps hinged on vertical axes lying opposite each other at the edges ot' the u'oll and extending when open to approximately the center line of the Srou' and means for Swinging the flaps to anv desired position.
ln testimonyv whereof l have hereunto Signed my mime in the presental of the t\\'o Subscribed witnesses.
