GARBAGE CHUTE All}? CAN.
Specification of Ele'ttns Eater-. 11,
Patented Her. "2, i909.
Application filed December 13, 3.967, Serial l lo, 405,795.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN Bnansnaw, citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, in the State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garbage Chutes and Cans, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms will enable those'skilled in the art to construct and use the same;
This invention'is for the purpose of dis charging the garbage from buildings where there are a number of families living one over the other as is the cage with apartment houses, and large hats.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for allowing the escape ofthe odors from the: chute through a vent pipe passing out of the top of thethouse'.
A further object of the invention is to provide means to wash down the inside of the chute when the garbage has been thrown into it.
A further object of the invention to provide means for carrying cit the water used in washing down the inside of the chute, and for preventing the escape of sewer gas into the house from the sewer connection at the bottom of the pipe or chute; a further object being to provide means to prevent the accumulation or grease from stopping up the sewer pipe and mterfering with the operation of the chute. 4
A further object of the invention is to produce a special form of garbage can which will be adapted to prevent the escape of odors from the chute and which will allow the water used in Washing the chute down to escape to the sewer thus draining the mass of garba e.
A further o)ject of the invention is to produce a special form of door for the garbage chute which will prevent the escape of odors from the chute and which will at the same time afford means to assist in placing the garbage in the chute.
Another object of the invention is to so form the chute that the, pipes used for de livoring the water thereto will be out of the way and in such a position as will prevent the accumulation of garbage upon them.
Another object of this same construction is to prevent the garbage from soiling limo any-more than 1s actually necessary.
the
l Other objects or" the invention will appear as the description proceeds,
in the drawings in which the same nu inerals are applied to the same parts throughout, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of a house having this chute installed for two lloors. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section oi a part l the chute at one of the feed doors, l i is a plan of the baud used to seal the chu e at the garbage receptacle, and {r is a plan of the garbage receptacle.
it is lo he. noted. that in all the modern regulations with regard to the arrangement of plumbing in cities the rules do not allow anything save an air light pipe to be connected with the sewer directly, as for example ii a sinl: is to be used it must have what termed a Vent pipe" leading directly from the sewer to the roof of lhe building, a trap being interposed between the vent pipe and the sinlc or hopper. l t will also be noted that if the water from a garbage can be allowed to pass directly into the sewer it will clog the sewer in a short line on account of a cumulations oi grease 1 cm the mass of garbage.
in this ini. ition it is proposed that the chute l, 2,.3, pass entirely through the porch of the nouse and out at the roofas shown at 4, each section of the chute being of less dimensions than that section of the chute below in order that when the garbage is thrown into it from above it will fall down approximately near the center of the chute.
it will be uiulerslood that the chute may be made of any desirable cross section, either round or square.
At each floor oi. the house there is an inlet door for placing the garbage in the chute, the inlet having one door 5 which opens on a hinge at the bottom, and a second door 6 which opens on a hinge at the top, a latch 7 being provided to keep both doors shut. At the junction of each section with the larger section below is placed a water pipe 8, said piae beiz'ig under the shoulder formed by the sm: 4 V e and the large pipe in order lhat lho garb a may not collect on the pipe. This pipe has seriesof holesin it and is adapted to sprinkle water on the inside of the chute when garbage has been thrown into it.
in order thal may not be filled with water it is provided with a perforated bottom-plate 10, said plate being removable. Below the plate 10 in the can 9 is an inwardly extending flange 11 which fits down over the rim of the basin 12, a rubber or other gasket being placed in the space between. the flange and the outside of the can. in order that the can may be made air tight. The can 9 is intended to be removed from the chute when it is filled and in order that no odor may comefrom the can the band 13 is placed around the chute and the can at the point at which they are joined, a tightening device 14 being placed at the ends of the band 13 to draw it tight.
When the can has been removed from the end of the chute it is necessary to prevent the piling up of the garbage at the bottom of the chute should any-person throw any garbage down when the can has been taken away to be emptied, and a slide 15 is pro vided to prevent the mass of material from falling down into the cess pool 12. The cess pool 12 is connected with the sewer in accordance with the plumbing regulations of the city, which require a Vent pipe to be placed at 16. a
Each wash pipe is provided with a valve that may be used by the person who is throwing the garbage into the chute, and the pipes may be connected with the hot water boiler on each floor.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows, modifications within the scope of the claims being reserved:
1. In a garbage chute, a removable can having a perforatedremovable bottom and a packing joint at the bottom, a cesspool on which the can 1s placed, a chute connected to 2.In a garbage chute, a removable can v having a perforated bottom, a cess pool on which the can is placed, a sewer connection for the cesspool, a chute connected with the can, successively smaller chutes connected with the lower chutes and forming a series of shoulders, and a wash pipe placed under the shoulder of the chutes at their points of connection.
3. In a garbage chute, a removable can having a perforated bottom, a cesspool on which the can is placed, a chute connected with the can and having successively smaller chutes as it passes up and forming a series of shoulders, wash pipes placed at the shoulder of the smaller chutes and the larger chutes and adapted to wash the inside of the chutes, and a double door at each floor of the building through which the garbage may be thrown into the chute. v
4. In a garbage chute, a large chute, smaller chutes connected therewith and extending out the roof of a building, a garbage can having a perforated bottom at the bottom of the large chute, a cesspool, a sewer connected with the cess-pool, a vent for the sewer, and means whereby the can may be entirely removed from the cess-pool for cleaning.
In testimony whereof I have set my hand this 26th day of November, A. D. 1907, in the presence of the two subscribed Witnesses.
