Description
(NoModeL) a A. G. DRURY.
I SEWER TRAP. I No. 452,750. Patented May 19, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED COOPER DRURY, OF CANTON, NEIV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MURRAY N. RALPH, OF SAME PLACE.
SEWER-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,750, dated May 19, 1891.
Application filed August 22, 1890. Serial No. 362,750. (No model.)
To all whom it 77mg concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED COOPER DRURY, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Canton, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Sewer-Trap, of which the'following is a specification.
This invention relates to sewer-traps; and it has for its object to constructacontrivance to of this class which shall effectually prevent the escape of sewer-gas into the plumbing fixtures of the building or structure to which it may be applied, and which shall, further-. more, prevent water from backing up into the drain-pipes.
The invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of a sewertrap constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view showing the valve-casing removed.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in both figures.
1 designates the street-main, and 2 is the house-drain. These pipes are provided at their meeting ends with flanges, designated,
0 respectively, by and at, to receive the connecting-bolts 5. a
6 designates the valve-casing, which is approximately cylindrical in shape and which is inserted into the street-main, as shown, 3 5 said valve-casing being provided with an annular flange 7, which is mounted between the flanges 3 and 4 and secured by the bolts 5. Packing 8, of rubber or other suitable material, is interposed between the flanges 3, 4, and,7,in order to make perfectly-tight joints. The valve-casing 6 is made smaller in diameter than the interior diameter of the pipe 1, in which it is fitted. The inner end of said valve-casing is inclined or oblique and is provided at its lower edge wit-h a lip 9, resting upon the bottom of the pipe 1. At its upper edge the inner end of the valve-casing is provided with the inclined top piece 10, having a suitably-constructed hinge 11, to which the gate or valve 12 is suitably connected. The pipe 1 may be provided directly above the valve with an upwardly-extendingbranch 13,
having a flange 14:, to which a ventilatingpipe may be connected but when the valve and fixtures are properly made the joint will be so perfect that such ventilating-pipe may be very readily dispensed with.
The operation of my invention and its advantages will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The trap may be easily applied to plumbing fixtures of ordinary construction without necessitating expensive changes of any kind. The gate or valve opening outwardly will readily admit of the passage of the waste water into the sewer, but will instantly and automatically close to prevent the passage of backwater or sewer-gas. The lip 9 at the inner end of the valve-casing affords a perfect seat and ample bearing for the lower edge of the gate, and there is no danger of its ever being clogged with impurities of any kind. The joints between the parts of the device are simple and effective and of such a nature as to afford ready access to the valve-casing, if for anyreason this should become necessary. The inclined top flange 1,0 at the inner end of the valve-casing forms aconvenient means for the attachment of the valve or gate, and 8c the general structure of the device is simple and inexpensive.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a sewer-trap, the combination, with the street-pipe having the flange 3, of the valve casing mounted in said street-pipe and provided at its inner end with a downwardlyextending lip 9 and with an inclined top flange 10, and at its outer end with a flange 7, the valve or gate 12, hinged to the top flange 10 and having a seat upon the lip 9, the house drain-pipe 2, having flange 4, and the packing and connecting bolts, all an 5 ranged and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED COOPER DRURY.
