Be it known that I, THOMAS WV. TSOHIF- FELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-Iagerstown, in the county of WVashington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Luggage-Carriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marks thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments to vehicles for carrying luggage, such as sewing machines, etc., and comprises a simple and eflicient device of this nature which, when not in use, is adapted to fold into a compact form.

The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which z- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my invention to a buggy. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the device folded, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings, by letter, A designates a board which has cleats A fastened transversely at its ends, and B is a longitudinal flange projecting at the inner edge of said board and provided with an aperture B for the reception of a strap or other fastening means D, whereby a sewing machine or other article may be held upon the device. Said cleats A are apertured for the reception of the bolts F upon the threaded end of which the winged nuts H are adapted to be mounted. A cross bar K provided with apertures K for the reception of said bolts is mounted upon the latter and is adapted to hold said bar in clamping relation against the under side of a vehicle body, as shown. A lid or shelf, designated by letter N, is hinged to said cleats A and adapted to fold over upon the upper edges of the same, as shown in the drawing. nates a metallic band fastened at its ends to the ends of said shelf and the sides of the cleats and said band projects up above the upper surface of the shelf and forms means for preventing the legs of a sewing machine from sliding off the shelf or any other article which might be held upon the shelf. Said shelf is provided with an elongated slit L through which a strap may be passed as the article being carried is being fastened upon the carrying device.

A horizontally disposed bar T is adapted to be placed through the legs of a sewing machine for which the device is especially adapted or made to engage any other article desired to carry upon the device and is provided with an aperture S for the reception of a crank shaft S having a shoulder adapted to bear against the upper surface of said bar and the threaded end for engagement with the threads of the plate I fastened to the under side of the board A and which is provided with an aperture registering with the aperture in said board. By this means, the article being carried may be securely clamped and held against the board and shelf.

From the foregoing, it will be noted that, by the provision of an apparatus as shown and described, a simple and efficient means is afforded whereby sewing machines or other articles may be conveniently carried upon an ordinary buggy and, when the device is not in use, it may be folded upon itself, forming a neat appearance.

What I claim to be new is An attachment for buggies for carrying sewing machines, etc., comprising a board having a flange at one edge at right angles to the board which is apertured for the reception of a retaining strap, an apertured shelf hinged to said board and adapted to be held flush therewith when open by coming in contact with the edge of the board, said shelf adapted, when closed, to be positioned behind said flange, a retaining strap passing through the aperture in the board and shelf and means carried by the board for holding an article thereon, as shown and described.
