Description

To all whom it may-concern: i
srATEs FREDEBIG EGAUBERT, YORK, N.- Y.
Application filed August 3,
Be it known that l, lFRaoERIo EQAUBERT, a citizen of the United States of America, i
- and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, I
' prevent leakage,. and without the exertion larly reference to a closure adapted to be the gasket and vessel.
. dicates the closure or cover in this instance city of New -York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generally to a packing or closure, and has more particuused for a containing vessel whose contents is under pressure or in centrifugal motion.
It is well known'that considerable difliculty is experienced in preventing leakage between the cover and the vessel in centrifugal or dairy machines, even when a gasket is interposed between the cover and the vessel. This is due to the fact that the diameter of these containing vessels is considerable, therefore enormous power has to be exerted to screw the cover down tight on The object of this invention is to enable a containing vessel of considerable diameter to be closed by a cover that will effectually of any great amount of power.
The invention consists in the hereinafter described features of construction, combination of parts and arrangement of elements. y In the accompanying drawin s the invention is shown' in a concrete an preferred form, but changes of construction may of course be made without departing from the legitimate and intended scope of the invention.
In the said drawings :-Figure.l-is a plan view of the. cover or closure embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the cover or closure and the upper end of the vessel to which it is attached.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
1 indicates a containing-- vessel of any suitable construction, in the present instance circular in form. At the upper end of this vessel there is provided a supporting shoulder 2 externall threaded. 'at- 3 and preferably downwar ly and inwardly i.nclined as shownin the drawing at 4. 5 in- Specification of Letters Patent. I
provided with an annular chamber 6 CLOSURE.
Patented Dec. a, race. 1907. Serial no. access.
formed by the downwardly projecting outer flange 7 internally threaded to engage with the threads 3 of the supporting shoulderof' the vessel, and by the downwardly projecting inner flange 12. Located in this annular chamber is a continuous gasket 8 resting on top of the su lVit-hin this chamber is urther located the continuous pressure distributing ring 9 which may be made of iron or other shitporting shoulder.
able material. 10 indicates a plurality of individually adjustable members shown here in the form of bolts which extend through the cover from the exterior thereof and bear against the pressure distributing ring, thereby exerting pressure on the packing only.
The cover is secured to the vessel in this instance by screwing it down in the usual manner, the interior threads of the flange 7 of the cover engaging with the exterior threadsof the flange 3 of the supportin shoulder of. the vessel. These threadsnee not be continuous, but ay be cut away like the thread in the breech block of a un. The cover need not be screwed down "un uly tight and. no effort need be made to obtain a sealed contact by turnin the cover itself. The cover having been placed in position the bolts 10 are turned one after another, thereby compressing the gasket 8 and adjusting the sealing contact thereof. No
great amount. of force is required to turn the members 10 since their diameter is comparatively small. It will be noted that on account of the 1nclined surface 4 a pocket 11 is formedinto which all the pressure exerted on the asketgtends. In this manner a more per ect sealing contact can be obtained than b attempting to screw, the cover itself own tightly on the gasket and vessel.
The word annular as used herein is not intended to limit the inventi n toa circular shaped containing vessel and cover.
I claim-:-
The combination of a vessel having an open end, a coverforclosing said open endprovided with substantially parallel flanges. arranged to engage both the interior and exterior surfaces of said vessel and spaced apart to form an annular chamber, one of said flanges being provided with means for securing the cover 1n position on the vessel, a packing located in said annular chamber in engagement with the upper edge of said vessel, a pressure distributing ring also located in said recess above and in engagement with said packing and adjustable pressure members extending through the cover from the exterior thereof and bearing upon the pressure dlstrlbutlng 'rlng, sald pressure members extendmg 1n a dlrectlon perpendicular to the upper surface of the pressure dlstrlbuting ring. 10 SIgned at New York city this 2nd day of August 1907.
