To all whom it may concern:
l Be it known that I, ERNEST MAY, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Block- Mold, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to the manufacture of building blocks or slabs of concrete or other plastic material, and its object is to provide a new and improved casting mold, arranged to permit of conveniently closing or opening the mold for placing the plastic material therein, and for removing the block or slab after the same has been formed and the plastic material has set and hardened, a particular feature of the invention being that the mold is provided with removable partitions for forming a large number of blocks or slabs simultaneously, the interior faces of the mold members being provided with registering or adjacent ribs, to provide each block or slab with a continuous groove along its edges.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the saine, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement in a closed position; Fig. Q is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a sectional perspective view of part of the improvement and showing more particularly the removable partitions and the ribs; and Fig. 4L is a plan view of the mold in an open position.
The fiask or mold illustrated in the drawings consists essentially of a bottom A, the front and rear sides B and C, the ends D and E and the top or cover F. The sides B and C and the ends D and E'are connected by hinges G with the corresponding edges of the bottom A, to permit of swinging the sides B and C and the ends D and E from a horizontal position into a vertical position or vice versa, and setting up and closing the mold or opening the same, as hereinafter more fully described.
In order to hold the sides B and C and ends D, E locked in a raised position when filling the mold, the following device is provided. On the ends D and E are secured or formed the sidewise extending apertured lugs H adapted to pass through openings or slots I in the sides B and C, and into the said lugs H are driven keys or wedges J resting on the outer faces of the sides B and C, to securely lock the sides and ends to gether when in a raised position, as shown in Fig. 1.
In order to press the cover or top F down firmly onto the plastic material and until the cover rests on the upper edges of the sides B, C and ends D, E, and to then lock the cover in place, the following arrangement is made: The free or upper edges of the sides B and C and the ends D and E are provided with integral apertured lugs H adapted to pass through openings or slots I formed in the top or coverF, and into the said lugs H are driven keys or wedges J resting on the upper face of the top or cover F, to securely hold the sides and ends-locked in a raised position and to hold the top or cover F locked in position on the sides and ends, as shown in Fig. l.
The inner faces of the bottom A, the sides B and C and the top F are provided with grooves K registering with each other when the mold members are in a closed position, and the said grooves K are adapted to receive transverse partitions L for dividing the interior of the mold into separate compartments, each of a size corresponding to the block or slab to be made. The bottom A, the sides B and C and the top or cover F are also provided with ribs N, preferably triangular in cross section, and arranged parallel to and alternating with the grooves K. The corresponding ribs on the bottom A, the sides B and C and the top F are beveled at the ends so that the corres onding ribs meet or join when the mold is cibsed, so that each compartment in the flask is provided with a continuous or annular rib formed of the four corresponding ribs on the bottom A, the sides B, C and the top F of the mold. When the mold members are in open position, as shown in Fig. A, then the grooves K and the ribs N extend transversely in register with each other, as plainly indicated in Fig. Il.
The sides B, C and the ends D, E are provided with eXterior handles O, and the top or cover F is provided at its ends with handles P, to permit the operator to conven- IOO `the blocks or slabs extremely true and smooth.
The mold is used as follows: In setting up the mold, the sides B, C and the ends D, E are swung upward into a vertical position and locked therein, as previously explained, and then the partitions L are inserted in the registering grooves to form the interior of the mold into a number of compartments,
each of which is now filled with concrete or other material, in a plastic condition, and then the cover' F is placed on top of the sides B and C and ends D and E and forced down and locked in place by engaging the wedges J with the apertured lugs Il', as previously explained. After the material has set in the mold compartments the keys J are removed, after which the cover Il1 is lifted off and then the sides B, C and the ends D, E are unlocked by removing the keys J, after which the sides B, C are swung downward and then the ends D, E, so that the blocks or slabs can be conveniently removed, it being understood that each of the slabs isV provided along its edges with a continuous groove formed by the oined ribs N.
The mold shown and described is very simple and durable in construction, composed of comparatively few parts or members, which can be Veasily manipulated to produce blocks or slabs having continuons annular grooves along their edges.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by I ielters Patent:
A casing flask comprising a bottom and sides hinged thereto, said sides having at their ends projecting slotted lugs, and on their upper edges projecting perforated lugs, ends having-a hinged connection with the bottom and having projecting perforated lugs at their sides and top, the side lugs engaging the slotted lugs of the sides, a. top having slotted lugs for engagement by the perforated lugs of the sides and ends, and a wedge-shaped hey engaging the perforated lugs whereby to force the parts into close engagement with ach other.
