MOLD FOR CEMENT BLOCKS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ETTA P. FRINK and DRURY A. J onus, both citizens of the United States, residing at Fort Lupton, in the county of Weld and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds for Cement Blocks; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in molds for cement blocks, our object being to provide a construction of this class adapted to be readily removed from the block without interfering with the form thereof when the block is still in the soft state, and to this end the mold is composed of four members or walls hinged together at the corners, the hinge pins being located outside of the planes of the walls so that as soon as the walls of the mold begin to move during the operation of taking the mold from the block, the walls leave the block whereby the corners are left intact and sharp or well defined.
Another feature of our improvement consists inthe means for quickly locking and unlocking the mold whereby it is readily detached from the block and quickly restored to its normal position for molding purposes.
Having briefly outlined our improvedconstruction, we will proceed to describe the same in detail reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved mold showing the core in place, the mold, however, being otherwise empty or free from the plastic material which is to form the block. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device shown on a smaller scale, the mold being filled with the cement or other plastic material which forms the block. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the mold partly detached from the block.

Let the numeral 5 designate the mold considered in its entirety. This mold is composed of two side members 6 and two end members 7. These members are hinged to- Specification of Letters Patent.

One of the end members 7 is provided with a centrally located tongue '10 having an outwardly bent lip 12, adapted to enter an opening 13 formed in a locking device 14 comprising a plate 15 hinged to one of the side members 6, the said plate being provided with pins which enter sleeves 16 formed at one The locking plate 15 is provided with a lever arm 17 for manipulating purposes. When the device is in the locked position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the plate 15 occupies a position in front of the lip 12 of the tongue 10, thus locking the mold in the closed position.
When it is desired to unlock the mold, this may be accomplished by moving the lever arm 17 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, thus disengaging the locking plate from the lip 12 and allowing the tongue to pass through the opening 13, whereby the parts are allowed to assume the position shown in Fig. 3, in which event the mold may be quickly removed from the cement block 18.
As shown in the drawing the sides and one end of the mold are provided with handles 19 which may be employed if desired to facilitate the handling of the mold.
When the device is in use, the mold is placed upon a board or bed plate 20 which closes it at the bottom. A core 21 is then placed in a central position in the mold, the
same resting upon the base plate or board 20. This core is preferably provided with an upwardly projecting stem 22 for convenience in handling. The cement or concrete of which the block is to be formed, is then poured into the mold around the core, until the mold is filled. In this case the mold is in the closed position and locked as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. After the mold has been filled, the base plate is lifted and the mold and its contents are carried to one side or to any desired location where the blocks are to be placed for drying purposes. As soon as this is done, the mold is unlocked by moving the arm 17 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, after which the tongue 10 with its lip 12 will slip through the opening 13 of the locking device, after which the mold is readily detached from the block. After this is done, the mold is again closed or placed in the locked position and set upon another base board or plate and the operation is repeated.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is: w
1. A mold of the class described, composed of two side members and two end members, one of the end members being hinged to both side members, while the other end member is hinged to one of the side members, the last named end member and the other side member being detachably connected by means of alocking tongue formed on the end member, the said tongue being centrally located on the edge thereof and extending at a rightangle therefrom, an outwardly projecting lip carried by the tongue at its extremity, and a locking plate provided with an opening through which the locking tongue is adapted to pass, the locking plate being pivotally connected with the side members and adapted to interlock with the said tongue beyond the opening, substantially as described.

A mold of the class described, composed of two side members and two end members, one of the end members being hinged to both side members and the other end member hinged to one of the side members, the last named end member and the other side member being detachably connected by means of a tongue with which one of the connecting members is provided, a lockposed of a number of members hinged to,
gether, two of the members being detachably connected by means of a tongue formed on one member, and a hinge locking device with which the other member is provided, the locking device having an opening through which said tongue is adapted to pass, the tongue having a lip adapted to be engaged by the opposite end of the locking device from the opening, when in the locking position and an operating lever connected with the upper portionof the locking device, substantially as described.
