marten STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED HEDLEY COTTON, OF RAVI ENE, I-IOKIANGA, NEW ZEALAND.
TOY.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED HEDLEY C01- TON, a subject of His Majesty the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, resident of Rawene, Hokianga, in the Provincial District of Auckland and Dominion of New Zealand, have invented a Toy, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in trundle toys and more particularly to a toy of that type in which movably related links are employed for causing regular movements of a figure of grotesque or ornamental design.
The object of the invention is to provide such a toy with novel means for causing the simultaneous operation of at least two of the aforesaid figures, a system of connected levers being employed for this purpose.
A further object of the invention is to provide anovel organization of parts comprehending a sounding device which is an important adjunct of the movable figures.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated a preferred and advantageous embodiment of the invention.
In the said drawing: the figure is a side elevation illustrating the manner in which a system of connected levers is employed for operating two figures simultaneously and illustrating also the connection of the sounding device.
In the said drawing the letter A designates a wheel which travels upon the floor or ground and which carries a central stem or spindle B to which the handle C is pivoted. Eccentrically pivoted to the wheel A is a link l), the outer end of which is pivotally connected to the link and the latter is pivoted to the handle C. A link F has its lower end pivoted to the link E intermediate the length of the latter and its upper end pivoted to a link H, the latter being in turn pivoted to the handle O at some distance rearwardly ot' the pivot of the link E. The links E and H are extended beyond their pivotal connections with the respective links D and F and are formed as figures of men.
It will be apparent that as the wheel A turns, the links D and E will have a scissors-like movement and will be alternately Specification of Letters Patent.

moved away from and toward one another, so that an up and down movement of the figure G is produced, the said figure G being formed on the extension of the link E. In the same manner the connections of the links F and H produce corresponding movements of the latter and therewith of the figure G which is provided on the extension of the link H. The links E and F are so connected that the figures G and G move together, that is, simultaneously in the same direction. It is obvious, however, that by varying the location of the pivotal connection between the links, relatively opposite movements of the figures G and G may be produced if desired.
The sounding device comprises a cylindrical pipe S which may be provided with a reed or whistle and through which a piston rod R- works, the latter having at its inner end a suitable plunger and being pivoted at T to a portion of the figure G. in this manner, as the latter oscillates, the piston rod R is caused to reciprocate with relation to the cylinder S and sounds are thus given forth. The cylinder S is pivoted at its lower end upon the wheel A.
Having fully described my invention, I claim:
1. In a trundle toy, a wheel, a handle pivoted at the center of the wheel, a pair of pivotally connected links one of which is pivoted eccentrically to the wheel and the other of which is pivoted to the handle, and a second pair of pivotally connected links, one of which is pivoted to the link of the first named pair which is pivoted to the handle and the other of which is also pivoted to the handle.
2. In a trundle toy, the combination with a wheel and a handle pivoted at the center of the wheel, of a link pivoted to the handle, a sound-producing cylinder pivoted eccentrically to the wheel, an element slid-able in the cylinder for causing the sound-producing operation and pivoted to the link, and a second link pivoted to the first named link and pivoted also to the wheel.
ALFRED HEDLEY COTTON.
