KNOCKDOWN BOX.
@digiti Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, i909.
Application filed November 30, 1908. Serial No. 485,234.-
To all who/mit may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS IVEGLEIN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing in the 'city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and use.- ful Knockdown Box,vof which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful knockdown box and consists of a construction whereby the box may be placed in operative position quickly and expeditiously.
It further consists in providing a supplemental side or protector for the connection between the parts.
It further consists in forming a support for the top flaps and top pieces of the box.
It furthei` consists of other novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully setI forth.
Figure l represents a blank from which my box is constructed. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the blank showing some of the parts in diiferent position. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view show-ing the box in operative position with the top pieces and top flaps in open position. Fig. et represents a rear perspective view of the, box. F ig. 5 represents a sectional view through the center thereof. Fig. 6 represents a perspective view showing the box in knockdown position for storage and for shipment.
I have found in practice in knockdown boxes now in use and owing to the construction of the same, considerable time is necessary in order to place the. blank in operative position and further both hands of the operator are required for this purpose.
My invention is designed to .overcome these defects and in the'drawings, I have shown the construction which I have found in practice operates successfully but it. will be evident that changes may be' made in the construction, the arrangement ofithe parts may be varied and other instrumentalities may be employed which will come within the scope of my invention and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction as herein shown and described but desire to make such changes as may be necessary.
Referring first to Fig. l, it will be seen that I construct my box preferably out of a single piece of material, although in some instances. such as in large boxes, it may be desirable to construct the same of several` pieces suitably connected together.
l-designates the front piece of the box. 2 and 3 the end pieces between which and lthe front arethe scored lines et. and 5 and G designate two portions which in the present instance are'to forni the rear side and which portions are adapted to be suitably con nected ror joined together. Any suitable m xans for thisl purpose may be employed and in the drawings. l, have shown the portion 5 formed with the slot T andthe portion (i with the tongue S having the slot. 9 therein, said tongue adapted to be inserted in the slot 7, a suitable portion of the wall of the slot 7 being adapted to be seated in the slot E) whereby the parts are held in position. Projecting from the end pieces 2 and if are the top tiaps l0 and ll.
l2 designates a bottom piece which extends from the front piece l, between which is a suitable score line while extending from each side ofthe bottom l2 are the supplemental orA auxiliary end tlaps I3 and li. suitable scoring being provided` between the said bot tom and said supplemental end tlaps. llxtending from the bottom is the supplemental rear or side piece 1.3 between which and the bottom is a suitable scoring and extending from said supplemental side piece is the top lt on which is the truck IT.
In order to fold the blank in proper position for shipment and storage, l bend or turn in the supplemental end pieces 13 and Il and bring the same over with the bottom bending at the scores I connect the tongue S with the slot 7 in the portion .3 of the rear piece, the parts being then in the position seen in Fig. G, wherein the bottom piece is and the front l with the supplemental end flaps 13 and 14 also folded therein, while the supplemental rear piece or side l5 rises from the bottom as well as top 16 and the tuck 17,. It will be seen that the interlocking tongue 8 and the slot 7 are on the back of the box, and thus they do not present themselves' to view at the front and sides of the box, said front and sides thus having an unbroken appearance. In order to open ,the box into operative position it is only necessary for the operator to employ one hand by inserting the fingers between the bottom 12 and the supplemental end pieces 13 and 14 which will open out the body portion and depress the bottoni causing the l supplemental rear portion I5 to rest against l2 against the front piece l and by suitable t folded-within and between the end piece 3 litt) the back piece formed of the portions 5 and 6, thus doubling the backof the box and correspondingly strengthening it thereat the parts being in the position seen in Fig. l, the supplemental end pieces 13 and 14 being situated against the inside of the end pieces 2 and-3 extending upwardly to substantially the scoring between the flaps l0 and 1l thus doubling the ends of the box and correspondingly strengthening it thereat. The article or articles are placed in the box, the flaps and 1l are turned in, as seen in Fig. 4, the supplemental end pieces serving as a support thereforv after which the tuck 17y can be inserted between the front l and the top piece 16 restingv on the said tlaps and being supported thereby.
From the above it will be seen that I provide a support for the lid, that I provide a protector or covering for the jointing of the portions forming the rear piece and that I extend up the supplen'iental end pieces so that the box is adapted for containing powder or other small or very fine article as will be evident.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l. In a box, a back, a front piece, end pieces extending rearwardly from said front piece and rear pieces extending inwardly from said end pieces against said back, thus provided with means for locking them on the back of the box.
2. A box composed of a front piece, end
pieces on the sides thereof, rear pieces on the end pieces, a bottom piece on said front piece, a back piece rising from said bottom piece, said rear pieces being adapted to fold against said back piece and provided with means for interlocking purposes said means being located on the back of the box, flaps rising from' the bottom piece, a to continuous of said back piece, and aps on the end pieces projecting therefrom in a direction opposite to said bottom piece. l
3. In a box, a bottom, flaps rising from the sides thereof, a front piece with end pieces extending rearwardly therefrom and covering said flaps, thus doubling the en ds of the box and strengthening the same thereat, and rear pieces extending inwardly from said end pieces against said back, thus doubling the back of the box and strengthening the same thereat said rear pieces having means of interlocking, the same being on the rear of the back.
