To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that T, Gnrrrm TVATKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at he city of Washington, in the county of Franklin and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to boots, especially to that class suitable for use in automobiling, riding, etc., and has for its object to provide a boot in which the leg part is formed like a. legging which is secured to the foot part and provided with straps, lacing, or other suitable means for holding said leg part around the calf of the wearer.

The novelty of this invention resides in the peculiar shape in which the inside quarter and the frontportion of the leg part are cut and the peculiar manner in which said parts are fitted together, which is hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, in which like numbers of refer ence denote like parts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is a front view of the boot, and Figs. 2, 3, and e'c, are perspective views showing the leg part open.

The boot is made of strong flexible material, preferably leather, and is provided with the sole 1 to which the heel 2 is fastened. The one-piece side 3 which is sewn or otherwise suitably secured to said sole, extends partly over the instep of the foot and upwardly to the top of the leg part :l. The quarter 5, which is, also, secured to said sole extends partly over said instep and upwardly to a line above the ankle. The cap or toe 6 is secured to said sole and extends rearwardly on each side of the foot, where it is sewn to said side 3 on one side and to said quarter on the other side.

The vamp 7 which is sewn to the cap 6, extends over the front of the foot and is sewn to edge 8 of the side 3 and to the edge 9 of the quarter 5. The tongue 10 is secured to the

11 and 12 of the side 3 and quarter 5, respectively, which are provided with the eyelets 13 through which the lace 1% passes and secures said edges together over the instep.

The side, or flap 15, is secured to the inner side of edge 16 at the top of said quarter,

and protrudes through the slit 17 in said edge. The portion 18 of said side, which is overlapped by said flap, extends upwardly from said slit, and preferably a little higher above the ankle than the edge 16. The edge 19 of the piece 20 is secured to the edge 21 of the flap by the strap 22, which stitt'ens the front portion of said leg part and prevents same from wrinkling. Said piece 19 overlaps the front portion of side 3 when the leg part 4 is secured about the calf of the wearer. The lower edge of said flap extends downwardly from said slit, thence curves forwardly and arches over the instep to the middle thereof, where it meets the lower edge of said piece which con tinues to arch over said instep and then curves rearwardly and upwardly until it terminates in the edge 23. The arch 24 formed as hereinabove described prevents said flap from pressing on the instep and allows the free action of the ankle of the wearer.

The strap 25, which is secured to the up per edge of piece 20, is adapted to hold the upper portion of said leg part closely around the calf of the wearer by the buckle 25 which is secured to the upper portion of side 3. The strap 27, is secured to the lower portion of piece 20 and is adapted to be wound around said leg part and held by buckle 2-8, secured to the upper portion of side 3. The

29 and 30 of side 3 and quarter 5, respectively, are held together by the strip 31, which is sewn thereto and extends from the heel to the top of edge 29, and the back edge 32 in the side 15 extends from the edge 16 to the top of edge 29 and is held thereto by said strip 31. Said strip is provided wit-l1 a plurality of slits 33 through which the strap 27 is passed and held in place around the leg part by the straps 34 formed between each pair of slits. 29 and 32, is held in place by the stitching, and prevents said leg part from wrinkling. The piece 20 and the side 15 are covered on the inside with the

36 and 37, respectively, and the side 3 is provided with the lining 38, which extends upwardly from a line above the ankle and covers the remaining portion of said side. 7

When it is desirable to make the leg part of said boot of material which dilters from the material forming the shoe part, it is necessary to form the side 3 in two pieces. This is accomplished by forming the lower portion of said side with a quarter having its top edge extending around one side above the ankle from the back end of edge 16 to the edge 11, and the leg portion of said side is secured along its bottom edge to the top edge or" said quarter. The back edge of said leg portion is secured to the back edge of fiap 15 which is secured to quarter 5 in the manner hereinbet'ore described.

I claim:

1. A boot having a one-piece side, a onepiece quarter sewn along the back edge to said side and extending to a line above the ankle, a two-piece flap sewn to the back edge of said side above said quarter, said flap being sewn along a portion of the bottom edge thereof to the inner side of a portion of the top edge of said quarter, a slit in said top edge through which the remaining lower portion of said flap protrudes, said re maining lower portion extending down wardly from said slit and adapted to arch the instep and cover the remaining )oi'tion of said top edge of said quarter, and means for securing the loose portion of said flap to said side.

2. A boot having a one-piece side, a onepiece quarter sewn thereto, a two-piece flap sewn to said side and to the inner side of a portion of said quarter, the lower portion of said flap extending outwardly through a slit in said quarter and adapted to arch the instep, means for securing said quarter and said side together over the instep, and means for securing the loose portion of said flap to said side.

3. A boot having a one-piece side, a onepiece quarter sewn thereto, a. two-piece flap sewn to said side and to the inner side of a portion of the upper edge of said quarter, means for securing said quarter and said side together over the instep, the lower portion of said flap extending outwardly through a slit in said upper edge and adapted to arch said instep and cover the remaining upper portion of said quarter and a portion of said securing means, and means for securing the loose portion of said flap to said side.

1. In a boot, the combination of a quarter having a slit in the upper edge thereof, a flap secured to the inner side of said quarter along the top edge thereof extending from the back seam to the edge of said slit, the remaining lower portion of said flap extending through said slit and downwardly therefrom covering the remaining upper portion ot said quarter in front of said slit and adapted to arch the instep, a one-piece side secured to the back edges of said quarter and said flap, a stifiening member secured along the back seam between said side and said flap, and means for securing the loose portion of said flap to said side.

In a boot, the combination of a quarter having a slit in the upper edge thereof, a flap sewn to the inner side of said quarter along the top edge thereof extending from said slit to the back edge of said quarter, the remaining lower portion of said flap being adapted to extend through said slit and downwardly therefrom covering the remaining upper portion of said quarter in front of said slit and to arch the instep, a one-piece side sewn along the back edge to said quarter and said flap, a lace adapted to secure said quarter and said side together over the instep and to be partly covered by said lower portion of said flap, a strip adapted to cover the entire back seam, a whale-bone se cured ul'iderneath said strip and extending from the top of said seam to the top of said quarter, a pair of buckles secured to the top portion of said side, a strap secured to the top part of the loose portion 01 said flap and adapted to be held by one of said buckles, a strap secured to the bottom part of said loose portion and adapted to be wound around the leg part of said boot and to be held by the other of said buckles, and a plurality of slits in said strip through which said last-mentioned strap is passed.
