To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, LoUIs MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates more particularly to a chin rest for smoking pipes.

Many people who like to smoke have either weak teeth or no teeth at all and those smoking certain styles of pipes must press their teeth very hard all the time against the pipe stem to keep it in position in the mouth. This is not always easy and it is often a very unpleasant task even with those who have good teeth, and much more so with those who have weak teeth or no teeth at all.

The primary object of the invention is to overcome the objectionable features referred to and to provide simple and efficient means whereby a rest may be attached to or formed as a part of the pipe so as to rest on the chin and thereby take the weight of the pipe from the teeth and transfer the same to the chin, thus making the pipe feel very light to the mouth and affording much more comfort than can possibly be obtained from devices of this class as ordinarily constructed.

A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient mouth-piece for the pipe stem which is adapted to fit under the gums of the smokers mouth, and assist in sustaining and properly holding the pipe while smoking.

With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly, described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

In the drawings, Figure 1, is an elevation of one form of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a dif ferent form of pipe, and means for supporting the same in the mouth. Fig. 3, shows how a rest may be attached to the pipe stem instead of being formed integral therewith; and Fig. 4, shows a slightly different form of pipe rest.

The pipe may be of any desired form or construction and of any suitable material and may have the usual bowl 10, from which Specification of Letters Patent.

may project the stem 11. On the outer end of the stem is a mouth-piece 12 which may be enlarged somewhat so as to provide a projecting portion 13 to extend under the upper gum, and a part 14, to project clownward under the lower gum to assist in holding the pipe in the mouth, and particularly whefle the smoker has weak teeth or no teeth at a The bracket 15 may extend downward from the pipe stem 11, and said bracket may be of any suitable construction so as to adapt a part formed thereon or carried thereby to rest against the chin of the smoker to support the weight of the pipe, and to transfer the strain from the teeth to the chin of the smoker. As shown, the bracket 15 is formed integral with the stem 11 and is provided with a substantially S-shaped part or rest 16 which conforms to the shape of the chin of the smoker. This bracket 15 is provided with an opening 17, therethrough to make the same light, and the said bracket and rest portion forming a supporting device may be made of a suitable shape to make the pipe attractive in appearance. As will be seen when the pipe is held in the mouth and the rest is in the position shown, the weight of the pipe will be removed from the mouth to the chin so that the pipe will feel very light to the smoker and the discomfort caused by grasping the pipe stem with the teeth entirely removed.

In Fig. 2, the pipe is somewhat differently shaped from that shown in Fig. 1, and the stem 18 is provided with an enlarged part 19 which is adapted to fit under the upper gum of the smoker, and the device 20, while performing the same function as the device in Fig. 1, differs therefrom principally in the shape of said device which may be either attached to or formed integral with the stem 18 or the bowl 21 of the pipe.

The stem 22, Fig. 3, has a device provided with the rings or bands 23 and 24. From the band 23 extends a rod 25, and from the band 24 extends the rods 26 and 27 so as to form a substantially angular bracket on which is supported a rest 28 adapted to engage the chin of the smoker. This rest 28 is curved at 29 to conform to the shape of the chin and is adapted to support a pipe in substantially the same manner as in the other figures.

Fig. 4 shows a diiferent form of pipe 30, and projecting outwardly from the stem 31 thereof is a bracket 32. This bracket 32 has a rest or portion 33 formed integral there- With or attached thereto as desired, and said rest is adapted to engage the chin of the smoker as already described.

From the foregoing it Will be seen that a simple and eflicient rest for a pipe is provided, Which is adapted to remove the strain from the teeth or mouth of the smoker and transfer the same from the mouth to the chin, thus making the pipe very light and comfortable While smoking; and that simple means is provided which is adapted to fit under the gums of the smoker and assist in holding the pipe in the mouth.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 7 l. A pipe stem having a bracket depending therefrom and curved to conform to the contour of the chin of the user.
