FENCE-POST, &'c.
c Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 6, 1908. Serial No. 431,291.
To all whom it may concern: j Be it known that I, HEYE J. VEssnns, a citizen of the United States1 residing at German Valley, in the county' of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following tovbe a full, clear, and exact, description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to malte'and use the same.
This invention relates to felice posts and has special reference to an improved form of reinforced concrete fence posts.
Oneobject of thev invention is to provide an improved general construction for fence posts of this character.
Another objectof the invention is to provide an' improved reinforcing means for such a fence post.
A third objectof the invention is to provide a casing for such a fence post which is held in position in a novel manner. j
A fourth object of the invention is to provide a fence post with a broadened under-1 ground portion to which the top of a post 1s attached by means. l
A fifth object of the invention is to provide a casing for the upper part of the underground portion of such a post, said casing having an improved connection with the casing of the upper part of the post.
With the above objects in view the invention consists in general of a fence post having a broadened base, the post and baseA beingl made o f concrete reinforced and cased in a novel manner.
The invention :furtherA consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims. In the accompanying drawings,' like Acharacters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and z-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fence post constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal median section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3lof Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar section on the pared in the usual manner. Surrounding the improved reinforcing this top port-ion is a casing 11 provided with Patented NOV. 23, 1909. l
a plurality of openings l2 disposed in a vertical series. This portion of the post is preferably frusto-conical in form and the casing 11 extends over the top of the cement being provided with a centrally disposed aperture 13. The post is provided further with a base 14 of relatively large cross vsectional area and upon the upper end of this base i portion is a protecting' collar 15. The casing 11 extends downward into the base and at' its lower extremity is formed with alternately arranged rebent members 16 which are riveted or otherwise secured to the casing 15 as indicated at 17, and downward and inwardly extending members 18. These members are formed bylongitudinally slitvting the easing 11. for some distance above its bottom.
For the purpose of reinforcing the'postand holding the parts together'as well as for the adjustment of fence wires there is provided a reinforcing element which comprises a. ortion 19 extending throughout the length ofJthe post and terminating at a point adjacent the bottom of the base 14 in a hook 20. The portion 19 is twisted as at 21 to form an eye and this eye projects through the opening 13. The reinforcing bar then extends downward adjacent the portions of the'casing', being provided with eyes 22 each formed by twisting' a portion, of the barand these eyes project laterally through the openings.
In constructing the post the casing and reinforcing wires are placed in mold with the lower ends of the casing extending downward. The mold is then filled with concrete in the usual manner,` the concrete being tamped from time to time as the tilling goes on. When the mold has been lilled the concrete is allowed to settle when the post may be removed by placing in the position in which it is to be used.
There has thus been provided a. sim le and efficient device of the character escribed and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes'may be made in the form and proportions of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a fence post, the combination with a Concrete core and a larger concrete base, of a easing surrounding said coro, said easing being provided with a portion having longi tndinal slits therein to hold in the base, the segments formed by the slit portiona being outwardly rebent and inwardl)7 bent., and a second casing Surroundingy the top of the base and connected to the relient portions 'of the first mentioned casing. n
2. In a fence post, the combination with a concrete core, and an enlarged concrete base,
of a eaSing surrounding said Core, a second 'easing Surrounding the base, meansl to oonnect said easing, comprising a head and ontv wardly relient end portions formed on the first; mentioned casing` and a reinforcing rod extending upward from said base through the base and core, said rod being double on its upper Aend and twisted to fori'n a loop and hence extending downward again to the base.-
3. In ay fence post, the combination with a concrete core and an enlarged base, of a easing surroundingr said core provided with a plurality of `openings arranged in vertical series, a Second raeing surrounding Said baee,
' ineans to connect the lirst and second easing,
