To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL LEE GARNER, a citizenof the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Slicing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for slicing bread, vegetables, etc, and its object is to provide a simple and com act machine of this character having a num er of knives designed to be simultaneously shifted into enga ement with the object to be sliced, simp e and efficient means being employed whereby these knives can be readily manipulated. 1
Another object is to rovide a series of knives which can be quic (ly adjusted toward or from each other to regulate the thicknesses of the slices to be cut.
Another object of the invention is to pro yide means for automatically engaging the object to be sliced, said means being shiftable out of engagement with the object when the knives are Withdrawn theitefrom or elevated.
With these and other objects in view the invention consist's of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

Arranged upon this table, preferably at one end, is a frame consisting of side walls 3 and an end wall 1, there being suitable braces 5 connecting the walls and table so as to hold said walls securely in proper position. Arranged upon the inner surface of each side wall 3 are 'arallel guides 6 forming a channel 7 there etween withinwhich is mounted a slide 8. The two slides constitute bearings for theend portions of a cross-rod 9 to which is secured an end stri 10, having a longitudinal slot 11 therein or the purpose hereinafter set forth. Springs 12 connect the end portions of the rod 9 with the corresponding portions of another rod 13 which 'is mounted within and between the side walls 3 and close to the end wall 4. The rod 9 is therefore held normally adjacent the rod 13 with the slides 8 positioned in the upper ends of the guide-ways or channels 7.
Extending through the slot 11 is a series of stems 14, each stem having a screwthreaded end portion on which are mounted nuts 15 arranged at opposite sides of the end plate 11 and designed to clamp thereon so as to rigidly hold the said stems H in any positions to which they may be adjusted relative to the end strip 10. Each stem 1% extends beyond the butt or heel end 16 of a blade 17. Each blade 17 is substantially triangular in outline and extending from the small end thereof is a stem 18 havin a screw-threaded portion extending throng a slot 19 formed longitudinally within an end plate 20. Each 0 these threaded portions is provided with nuts 21 or other suitable clamping devices disposed at opposite sides of the end plate 20 and designed to clamp thereon so as to hold the stems 18 properly spaced apart and in the positions to which they may be adjusted. The blades 17 are so proportioned that when they are swung downward to the limit of their movement the lower or cutting edges thereofwill rest upon the table 1 throughout their lengths.
Pivotally mounted on the rod 13 is an actuatinglever 22 to which is pivotally connected a stem 23 of a yoke 24. The terminals of this yoke are pivotally connected to two of the blades 17 and extending downwardly from the stem 23 adjacentits point of connection with the lever 22 is an arm 25 constituting a stop designed to move into contact with one or more of the blades and thus positively insure the downward movement of said blades through objects placed thereunder. An eye 26 is formed on the lever 22 and is designed to engage a hook 27 arran ed on a frame 28 u standing from the walls 3. The lever 22 w ien thus placed in engagement with hook 27 will be supported in elevated position and the knives 17 will also be upheld so that any object to be sliced can be readily placed on the table 1 and in the path of the knives or blades 17.
Upstanding from the table 1 is a series of spaced fingers 29 which are perfectly rigid and designed, when the blades 1'? are resting on the table, to extend between said blades.

Extending upwardly from this rock bar is a series of fingers 33 project- 5 rin s constitute means for holdin the fingers 33 normally inclined upwardly and away from the fingers 29. A grooved wheel or pulley 39 is mountedu on one end por tion of the table 1 and gui ed on this pulley is a chain 40 or other flexible device one end of which is attached tothe lever 22 at a point removed from the pivot thereof as indicated at ll while the other end of the chain is secured to a spring 42 attached to an armor projection 34: extending downwardly from the rock bar 32. .lhese parts are so positioned that when the lever 22 is swim downward into its lowermost position t e chain 40 will pull on the spring 42 with sutlicint force to swing the reel; bar 32 and cause the fingers33 to move in the direction of the fingers 29. When however the lever 22 it raised the stress of the spring 42 will be removed and the spring 35 will be free to return the fingers 33 and the rock bar to their normal positions.
When it is desired to use this machine the lever 22 is raised and placed in engagement with the supporting hook 27. As before stated this operation will result in the fingers 33 being moved away from the tin.

By loosening the stems l4 and 18 within the slotted end plates 10 and 20 the blades can be shifted toward or from each other so as to regulate the thicknesses of the slices produced.

The combination with a supporting structure; of a member slidably mounted thereon, a series of spaced, parallel blades pivotally connected to said member, an actuating lever,'means for transmitting motion from the said lever to the blades, a stop device movable with the lever for engagement with one of the blades, and yielding 2.
