FRUIT AND VEGETABLE DISPLAY RACK.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1909.
Application filed June 29, 1909. Serial No. 505,018.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRUS C. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Fruit and Vegetable Display Rack, of which the following is a specification. Y
It is the object of this invention to provide a portable fruit stand of novel and improved form, adapted to receive display receptacles or trays, the parts of the stand being so constructed that the same may be adjusted, and retained in adjusted position, to disposethe display receptacles at different heights, and at different angles; other and furtherobjects being made manifest hereinafter as the description of the invention progresses.
The drawing shows but one form of the invention, and it is to be understood that changes, properly falling within the scope of what is claimed, may be made, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to denote like parts throughout the several figures of the drawing, in which,
Figure l is a front elevation; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end elevation the shorter tray being removed; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a frame comprising front posts 2 and rear posts 1, the posts 1 and 2 being connected, at each end of the frame, by cross beams 3, the front posts 2 and the rear posts 1 being connected by beams 10, the beams 10 and 3 giving to the frame a substantially rectangular outline. Located at the ends of the frame, between the posts 1 and 2, are intermediate posts 11, which rest upon the, cross beams 3. The posts 1, 11 and 2 are cut off at their upper ends, in an oblique line, and united by spreaders 5.
Above the cross beams 3, the rear faces of the posts 2 and 11 are cut away as denoted by the numeral 14, to form grooves, while the posts 1 are cut away to form similar grooves upon their forward faces, the construction last above pointed out being shown most clearly in Fig. 3.
A series of vertically movable bars are provided, the bars having reduced ends arranged to register slidably in the grooves 14 of the posts 1, 11 and 2, the reduced ends of the bars 4 being held in place within the grooves 14 by means of plates 6, bridging the grooves 14 from end. to end.
The posts 1, 11 and 2 are provided, at each end of the frame, and upon their adjacent faces, with inwardly extending teeth 8, in the form of a rack bar or the like, and the extremities of the bars 4 carry spring actuated catches 13, adapted to engage the teeth, whereby the bars 4 may be adjusted vertically within the frame, or brought into a common plane. The bar 4 which is supported by the posts 2, and the bar 4 which is supported by the posts 11, are each provided with longitudinally extending. channels 15, adapted to receive the lower edges of display receptacles 17 and 18. In Fig. 2, the receptacle 17 is shown in place, the same being sustained in the channel 15 of the bar 4 which is located at the front of the rack. When a smaller receptacle 18 is employed as shown in Fig. 1, the lower edge of the receptacle may be mounted in the channel 15 of the bar 4 which is supported by the intermediate posts 11.
Referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the posts 2 are provided with longitudinally extending slots 9, communicating with the grooves 14, it being understood that the posts 1 and 11 are provided with similar grooves. Set screws 7 are terminally mounted in all of the bars 4, the said set screws extending through the grooves 9 in sliding relation, and carrying at their extremities, wing nuts, or other suitable locking means. It will thus be seen that the bars 4 are held in position not only by the catches 13, but, as well, by the set screws 7, thus doubly securing the several bars in place.
If desired, the rack may be mounted upon ball-bearing casters 12 or the like, whereby the device may be readily rolled about for use either within or without a store.
Then a relatively long tray of the form denoted by the numeral 17 is used, the same, as shown in Fig. 2, may be supported by all. three of the bars 4; and when a shorttray of the form denoted by the numeral 18 is employed, the same may be supported upon two of the bars as shown in Fig. l. The bars may be raised and lowered to dispose the receptacles or trays at any desired height and to tilt them to any desired angle with respect to the horizontal.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. In a device of the class described, a frame including upright posts provided with longitudinally disposed grooves and With longitudinally disposed slots communicating therewith; toothed racks carried by the posts; bars arranged for terminal reciprocation in the grooves; spring actuated catches carried by the bars and arranged to engage-the racks; and clamping devices terminally mounted in t-he'bars and arranged to engage the posts, and disposed in the slots.
2. In a oevice of the class described, a frame including upright corner posts; other posts supported by the ends of the frame intermediate the corner posts; toothed racks carried by the posts bars connecting -the posts at one end of the frame ivith those at the other end and arranged to reciprocate in said posts longitudinally thereof; and spring actuated catches carried by the bars and ar ranged to engage the racks.
3. In a display stand of the class described the combination With a substantially rectangularframe having an upright grooved support at each corner, one pair of said sup ports being smaller longitudinally than the other, of intermediate supports carried by each of the transverse members of said frame, having grooves cut therein, upwardly extending teeth on sides of said supports adjacent said grooves, tray supporting bars having at each longitudinal extremity a spring catch, adapted to be vertically adjustable in said groove and means for retaining the said bars therein.
41-. In a display stand of the class described, the combination with a. substantially rectangular frame, having an upright grooved support at each corner thereof, one pair of said supports being smaller longitudinally than the other, of intermediate uprightgrooved supports carried by a transverse member of said frame, an oblique spreader attached to the upper extremities of said uprights, upwardly extending .teeth adjacent said grooves, said posts slotted opposite said grooves," tray supporting bars adapted to reciprocate in said grooves provided with a spring catch adapted to engage said teeth and having a set screw in said slots providing .a double lockingmeans, and means for retaining the bars in the grooves comprising a retaining plate secured over the same.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two TVitIlGSSBS.
