Molero.'
which is .sharpened at one nro eterne PATENT oriuonA HENRY A. SHERMAN, OF VAN VLECK, TEXAS DIRT-TAMPING TooL.
lo all whom it may concern:
3e it known that I, HENRY A. SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at V an Vlerk, in the county of Matagorda and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Dirt-Talnping Tool, of which the fo1 lowing is a specification. Y ivty invention relates to improvements 1n dirt' tamping toolsI and has for its object to 1 supply a more simple,I powerful and etieetive tool of this class. attain these objects by the meohanisln illustrated in the aeeonlpanying drawing, in which thetigure represents a. partial longitudinal lsectional View of my -tool. v 1' Stnnlar letters refer to similar throughout the specification and drawing.
is a tubular handlefhaving at its ends raps C. and D, having threaded connection `l'here\\'it,h These Caps are centrally tured and freely hsupport the tainping bar-B, end and at the other has a handle-or operating loop E. The pointed ond G is screw threaded and a guard loop H is adapted to be .secured thereon.
- lVtbiu the tubular handle a spiral spring l surrounds the tanip bar. are mounted on the bar. instable upon the screw Guiding washers 0f these, K is ad threaded section of Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed August 2, 1907. Serial No. 386,760L.
parte a perl Patented Nov. 16, 1909.
the bar and engaging the spiral spring puts the same under tension When the said bar is drawn outward. The Washer L is loosely carried on the bar and held in place between the main and a short terminal coil.
The cap C is provided With a set screw F to lock the saine against revolution on the tubular handle.
To operate the tarnping tool, the handle A is grasped by one hand While the hand grasp or loop E is drawn outward by the other onlpressing the spring I. On releasing the loop the spring, expanding, forcibly thrusts the tainping point into or against the material being operated on.
Having thus described my invention what l elaini and desire to protect by Letters Patent is ln a tamping tool, a tubular handle, a talnping bar longitudinally movable therein, a coil .spring surrounding the bar, means carried by the bar for engaging the spring and a .hand grasp or loop for retracting the bar` whereby the operating spring is compressed as set Jforth. l
