RIDDLE 0R. STEVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 25, 1908.
Patented Nov. 16, 1909.
Serial No. 423,112.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK MARTIN and MARTIN V. HASKINS, both citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Riddle or Sieve, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in sieves commonly called riddles which are used by molders, and consists essentially of certain peculiar detachable means for holding the foraminous bottom in place, together with means for supporting said bottom inside of its edges and for strengthening the same, all as hereinafter set forth.
The objects of our invention are, first, to
provide a strong, durable, serviceable and comparatively inexpensive device of the class specified, and, second, to furnish such a device with simple but efficient means for securely holding the bottom or sieve proper in place, which means can be easily and quickly manipulated to release the old bottom and to fasten a new one in position. Ne attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a part of a riddle embodying our invention, such sec tion being taken through the fastening device for the foraminous bottom and the inner ring or binder for such bottom; Fig. 2, a reduced plan view of said bottom with the wire support beneath; Fig. 3, a cross-section on lines 33, Fig. 2; Fig. 1, a section through and interior View of a portion of said binder, showing the slip joint formed by the ends or terminals thereof, and, Fig.
5, an isometric view on a reduced scale of I said support for the foraminous bottom.
Similar figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Our riddle or sieve comprises an annular rim 1, an internal ring, spreader or binder 2, a foraminous bottom 4:, a support 5 for the interior portions of said bottom, a screw 6, and two nuts 7 and 8, which members we will now proceed to describe in detail, also describing their relation to each other.
The rim 1 has an external roll or head 9, with a stiffening wire 10 therein, at the top,
and an internal roll or bead 11, with a similar wire therein, at the base. A groove 12 is formed on the inside of the rim 1 some distance above the bead 11, and below this grooved part the wall of said rim extends inward and then outward to meet said bead, thus forming an inwardly-directed annular ridge 13. An opening 14: is made in the ridge 13 for the screw 6.
The binder 2, which is designed to be placed in the rim 1 below the groove 12 as a medium for firmly securing the bottom 4: in position, has an interior ridge 15 similar to the ridge 13, and is turned inward at the top to form a head 16. The binder 2 is more or less resilient and so constructed that its ends overlap, and in these overlapping terminals are slots 17-17 which partially or wholly coincide under normal con ditions. The slots 17 like the opening it are for the screw 6. Four notches 18, two of which appear in Fig. t, are cut in the upper edge of the binder or in the bead 16 to receive the ends of the support 5, and the inner terminal of said binder is cut away at the top, as shown at 19, to enable such terminal to clear said support.
The bottom at, which is round and usually made of woven wire, is provided with a downwardly and inwardly extending flange 20 adapted to be received between the upper. inwardly inclined portions of the rim and binder, with the edge 21 of said bottom supported on the head 16 in the groove 12.
The support 5 is preferably made of cross wires twisted together in the center, with the ends bent downward and inward as shown at 22. This support is placed in the notches 18 in the binder 2, under the bottom 4, with the bent ends 22 against the outside of said binder.
Adjacent-faces of the nuts 7 and 8 are respectively shaped to fit into the ridge 13 on the outside and to receive the ridge 15 of the inner terminal of the binder, as shown in Fig. 1.
After the parts have been assembled by forcing the bottom 1 into the rim 1 and compressing the binder 2 until it can be introduced into said rim, with the support 5 be tween said bottom and said binder, the membets are securely fastened together by means of the screw 6 and the nuts 7 and 8, the slots 17 having first been brought into line with the opening 1%- by turning the binder in the rim to whatever extent may be neces .ry. Before tightening the screw t3 the binder is expanded as much as possible, the slots 17 permitting this to be done. When expanded the binder is not only held in place by the nuts and screw, but is further secured against downward displacement by the coinciding ridges 13 and 15 and the head 11. The flange 20 and the edge 21 of the bottom are now so securely held between the rim and the binder, owing to the pecul ar construction of those portions of these parts which contact with said bottom, that there is no liability that the bottom will become loose, and the bottom is further supported and strengthened by the presence of the member 5. When the old bottom at is worn out, or if for any other reason it becomes necessary or desirable to replace it with a new one, all that is required is to loosen the screw (5, coinpr'ss the binder 2, remove the old bottom, insert a new one, expand said binder, and again tighten said screw. The bottom at possesses some degree of flexibility, enough in fact to allow it to be forced into and out of position in the rim.
The support 5 may in some cases be omitted. The nut 7 is usually unthreaded.
Changes of minor importance in details of construction, as well. as alterations in shape and size, may be made in our device without departing from the nature of our invention.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a device of the class specified, of a rim having a grooved part to form an interior groove and having an interior ridge which starts from the base of the aforesaid grooved part of said rim and extends downwardly and inwardly and then downwardly and outwardly, a compressible binder inside of such rim and similarly formed to said ridge, a flanged foraminous bottom adapted to be held in said groove by such binder with the flange of said bottom between the downwardly and in- Wardly extending portions of said binder and rim, and means to fasten the binder and rim together.
