RIDDLE FOR SAND-SIFTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1914.
Application filed May 16, 1912. Serial No. 697,767.

Be it known that I, Josnrn F. DURKIN, citizen of the United States, residing at VViIkesBaI-re, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Riddles for SandSifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to riddles for use in sifting sand, and has as its object to provide an improved riddle which will be more durable and efficient than the ordinary riddles used for this purpose. Such riddles are ordinarily constructed with a WOOClGD rim or body having a wire bottom which is fixed therein and the riddles are made of different sizes, that is to say, with bottoms of different sized mesh. After such a riddle has been in use for a relatively short length of time, the wooden rim will be so cut by the sand as to render the riddle useless.
The present invention therefore has as one of its aims to provide a riddle so constructed that its rim will not be liable to be cut by the sand, and as another aim to provide the riddle with a number of removable bottoms having openings of different sizes so as to adapt the same riddle for use in screening different grades of sand.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in Which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the riddle embodying the present invention, a portion of the bottom thereof being broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the riddle and the supporting member of the sifter. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sectional views through modified forms of bottoms for the riddle.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
While as before stated, the principles of the present invention are to be embodied in a riddle designed primarily for use by hand, it will be readily understood that the riddle herein shown and described may be arranged within the supporting rim or head of any of the ordinary sand sifting machines, and that the rim of such a machine may be formed with a flange and a set of bottoms such as herein shown may be provided in connection with the machine and rcmovably supported upon the flange of the rim, in which event the rim will take the place of the rim or body of the riddle shown in the drawing. The body of the riddle is indicated by the numeral 7 and is formed of metal and, as in the case of the body of the ordinary riddle, is cylindrical.
By referring o Fig. 2 of the drawing it will be observed that the body 7 is formed interiorly near its lower end with an annular flange 8, and secured at its ends in this flange at diametrically opposite points is a wire 9.
By reference to Fig. 2 of the drawing it will be seen that the inner surface of the body7inclines inwardly toward the flange 8 and that the edges of the perforated bottom fit snugly against the inner surfaces of the wall of the body and upon the upper surface of the flange 8.
As before stated, the riddle is provided with a number of perforated bottoms which are removable and have their openings of different diameters so that the riddle may be readily and quickly adapted for screening different grades of sand and each of these bottoms is preferably in the nature of a sheet metal plate 10 formed with openings 11. The bottom shown in Fig. 2 is concaveconvex and has its concave side presented downwardly, it being disposed upon the flange 8 and the ends of the wires 9. as clearly shown in the said figure. Another form of bottom is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing and consists of a flat sheet-metal circular plate 12 and may be substituted for the bottom 10. Another form of bottom plate is shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, this plate being indicated by the numeral 13 and being formed with circumferential corrugations 14 and with perforations 15.
From the foregoing description of the invention it will be readily understood that there is provided a riddle. the bodv 10 of which will not be liable to be worn through by the cutting action of the sand being screened and which is so constructed that bottoms having openings of various diameters may be readily arranged therewithin so that the riddle may be readily and quickly adapted for use in screening different grades of sand. It will further be observed that the Wires 9 serve to support the middle portions of the screen bottoms so as to prevent sagging.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new is 1. A sifting riddle comprising an annular body having a supporting ledge projecting inwardly therefrom, the inner surface of the body being tapered so as to diverge up- Wardly from the upper face of the ledge, and a foraminous bottom adapted to be mounted loosely Within the body and to rest upon the supporting ledge.
2. A sifting riddle comprising a body having a supporting ledge projecting inwardly therefrom, the inner surface of the body being tapered so as to diverge upwardly from the upper face of the ledge, and a concavo-convex, foraminous bottom adapted to be mounted loosely Within the body with its convex face uppermost and to rest upon the supporting ledge.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
