EDIVIUND S. HOCI-I, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED POCKET-BOOK AND SAVINGS-BANK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 30, 1908.
Patented Nov. 16, 1909.
Serial No. 465,153.
[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND S. Hooii, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combined Pocket-Books and Savings-Banks, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as .will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Many eli'orts have been made to produce a small savings bank which may be carried about in ones pocket so as to be at hand whenever an impulse toward saving a small sum of money is felt. Heretofore savings banks of this type have had various draw backs, such as being cumbersome, producing a bulky feeling in ones pocket, and above all being adapted only for receiving savings so that there is no incentive to use them, eX- cept the desire to save.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple and novel form of pocket savings bank which may be carried without incon venience and which shall have the additional utility of a receptacle for bills, papers, cards or other matter which a person ordinarily carries about with him in a pocket :ase or the like.
The various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in the claims; but, for a full understanding of my invention, and of its object and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front view of a preferred form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side view; Fig. 3 is a top view, when the device is regarded as a savings bank, or a bottom view when the device is regarded as a pocket case for holding other matter than savings; Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 44 of Fig. 1, showing the flap of the card or bill receptacle open; Fig. 5 is a section taken at right angles to Fig. l, showing, however, only a fragment of the device; and Fig. 6 is a section on an enlarged scale taken on line 66 of Fig. 3.
In accordance with my invention, I combine with a pocket-book of any desired type a savings bank which is so constructed and arranged that the whole produces a single unltary structure having both the functions of the pocketbook and of the savings bank,
without materially adding to .the bulk or the pocketbook or changing its appearance or character. A device of this kind will not only be convenient to those who desire to carry a savings bank for its own sake, but it will also be attractive to those who need a pocketbook of some kind and will create an incentive to save by affording a repository for savings which otherwise would not be at hand.
In the drawing I have shown only a single embodiment of my invention, namely that of a card-case combining within itself a saw ings bank without materially altering the character of the case itself. It will, of course, e understood that in some of its aspects, my invention covers a broader field than that of plain card-cases or card-cases of the particular kind shown.
Referring to the drawing A represents a card-case open at one end and having a central longitudinal partition B for dividing it into two open-ended compartments or receptacles C and D; these compartments being adapted to receive cards, bills or other sheets which are usually carried about in ones pocket.
E is the usual flap extending beyond the rear wall a of the case and adapted to be folded about the open end and fastened dctachably to the front wall a The fastening device for the free end of the flap may take any usual form, as for example, a button F and a socket G.
In accordance with my invention the partition B is constructed in the form of a receptacle closed at the end adjacent to the flap and open at the opposite end. The top of the device, regarding it as a pocket-case, is therefore exactly like any card-case. The open end of the receptacle in the partition is closed in any suitable way so that savings may be inserted through that end and retained until the receptacle is unlocked. The closure for the savings receptacle may conveniently take the form of a door H hinged at h and having a look I for securing the free end in place. The lock may take any desired form and may be controlled by a key 2'. The bolt of the lock is indicated at 71 There is a slit K through the door, of a size suificient to receive coins. In order to prevent the coins from being withdrawn through the slit, I have provided a pair of springs L and L which are arranged lengthwise of the slit on the interior of the door. These springs are bowed so as to be closer together at the center of the slits than at the ends. Moreover, the springs are inclined in the direction longitudinally of the case so that the edges farthest from the coin-receiving opening are closer together than the edges adjacent to the opening. By this arrangement, when a coin is inserted, it engages with the springs at the center thereof and its withdrawal is resisted wholly or partly by the gripping action of the inner edges of the springs. After the coin has passed through the slit the springs act as a stop to prevent its removal.
It will be seen that the case may be carried about in ones pocket with the flap end uppermost and may not only be used as a simple card-case but will look like a cardcase and feel like one. At any time when it is desired to make a savings deposit the case is turned upside down and the deposit is effected by way of the lower end. When the savings receptacle becomes full, so as to make the case heavy, its contents may be withdrawn by unlocking the door and the process of accumulation may then be resumed.
The case itself is preferably made of leather, cloth or other pliable material of similar character, so that the entire device is flexible and yielding; the metal end of the savings compartment being so small.
- that it does not interfere with the flexible and yielding character of the device.
\Vhile I have described in detail only a preferred embodiment of my invention, I desire to cover all forms which come within the terms of the definitions of my invention constituting the appended claims.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A flat pocket-case having a compartment for sheets or cards, one of the side walls of which is made double so as to pro vide a savings compartment of considerable also a coin-receiving slot leading to said,
bank.
A pocket-case open at one end and having a longitudinal partition dividing it into two compartments closed at one end, said partition being hollow and having at the end adjacent to the closed ends of said compartments a movable cover provided with a coin slot, and a lock for said cover.
4:. A pocket-case open at one end and having a longitudinal partition dividing it into two compartments closed at one end, said partition being hollow and having at the end adjacent to the closed ends of said compartment a movable cover provided with a coin slot, a lock for said cover, and a flap on said case for closing the open end thereof.
A pocket case open at one end and having a longitudinal partition dividing it into two compartments closed at one end, said partition being hollow and having at the end adjacent to the closed ends of said compartments a movable cover.
6. A pocket case open at one end and having a longitudinal partition dividing it into two compartments closed at one end, said partition being hollow and having at the end adjacent to the closed ends of said compartments a movable cover and a flap on said case for closing the open end of the case.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
EDMUND S. HOGH.
