COOK-STOVE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1909.
Application filed May 13, 1909. Serial No. 495,609.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OVILA DESCHAMPS, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Moosup, in the county of Windham and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cook- Stove Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an attachment for cook stoves and more particularly a removable fire box which may be readily placed in and removed from the regular fire box of a cook stove and which contains means for varying the size of the fire compartment so that either a large or small fire may be maintained in the stove.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character which is especially useful and advantageous in summer time and which may be quickly and easily applied to an ordinary cook stove without altering the construction of the same.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of a portion of the top of an ordinary cook stove showing the invention applied thereto; Figs. 2 and 3 are longitudinal and transverse sectional views, the stove being indicated in dotted lines in these views; l ig. 1 is a plan view of the body of the attachment with the top supporting plate and lids removed; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the movable partition.
In the drawings T denotes the top of an ordinary cook stove S and 1 denotes the improved fire box which is removably arranged in the fire box of the stove S and which has an adjustable partition 2 for varying the size of the space or compartment of the box in which fire is made. The fire box 1 is preferably of rectangular shape having sides 3 united by ends 4 and its bottom is closed by a grate 5. 'T-his grate may be of any form and construction and, preferably, of the tilting type having at its ends pivots 6 to rotate in bearing recesses 7 formed in supporting ledges 8 on the end walls 4 of the box. A supporting and stop lip 9 provided on one side of the grate is adapted to enter a recess 10 in one of the side walls 3 to prevent the grate from rotating in one direction and to support it when in a horizontal position.
While any suitable means may be provided for supporting the fire box 1 within the regular lire box of the stove, I prefer ably form or secure upon its open top a supporting top plate 11 having a shouldered surrounding edge 12 shaped to fit the opening in the top '1. of the stove S When the usual stove lids and cross bar are removed from such top '1, as will be understood on reference to big. 1. The top plate 11 is preferably formed separate from the body 1 of the fire box and united thereto by bolts 13 or similar fastenings, lugs 1% being formed on the end walls l of the fire box for said bolts, as shown more clearly in big. 2. Said top plate 11 is formed with a shouldered opening 15 in which is arranged a removable cross bar and removable lids 17 similar to but smaller than the lids and cross bar in the top of the cook stove. in the parts 11, 16 and 17 are provided the usual notches for a stove lid lifter, whereby such parts may be easily manipulated or lifted when hot by the use of such a lifter.
The adjustable partition 2 extends transversely across the interior of the fire box 1 and is slidable longitudinally therein. To guide it in its sliding movement, slide bars 18 project from its opposite side edges and are disposed horizontally so as to slide in guide recesses 19 formed in the side walls 6 of the box 1. Since the inner side wall of the box 1 is formed with the openin 20 for the escape of smoke and products of combustion from the fire box the guide recess 19 on such side is disposed in a plane lower than the plane of the one on the other or outer side. he guide recesses or grooves 19 are preferably of such length that the partition 2 may slide from the front end wall of the box to the center of the latter, its movement beyond such central portion being prevented by the engagement of the slide bars 18 with the ends of the guide recesses or grooves. To permit the partition to be easily moved to the center of the box when disposed close to and in contact with the front end wall 41, a notch or recess 21 is formed in the front face of the partition at its top for the reception of the stove lid lifter or the like.
In operation, it will be seen that when it is desired to build a small fire in the stove its and a space or compartment of less than half of the sizeof the regular fire box of the stove is provided at the front end of the fire box 1 and in which a small fire may bemade,
Should a larger fire be desired, the partition 2 may be moved to the front end of the fire box lso that the entire space in the latter may be utilized, such space being somewhat less in size than the space in the regular fire box of the stove.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the invention is especially useful in summer time when only a small fire is needed for cooking purposes and that its use will not only lessen the amount of heat generated in a house by the use of an ordinary cook stove but also effect a saving of fuel and materially lessen the labor incident to making a fire in the large fire box of the ordinary cook stove.
lVhile I have shown and described in detail the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that various changes in the form, proportion and arrangement of parts and in the details of coning, and the inner 'faces of both the side walls being formed with longitudinally extending guide grooves, an upright transverse partition plate in the body and formed upon its opposite sides with horizontally projecting slide bars to engage and slide in said guide grooves whereby the partition may be moved from the center to one end of the body, a dumping grate in the bottom of said body, and a lid-carrying supporting top plate upon the top of the body and shaped to engage the lid openings in the top of a stove.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the resence of two witnesses.
VILA DESCHAMPS. l/Vitnesses:
