To all whom it 'may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY R. BENDA, a citizen of the United States, residing at N ew York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Cutting Clips; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification and illustrating one way in which my invention may be carried into effect.

This invention relates to devices designed to be fastened or attached to, and forming part of, spools, reels and coils, or equivalent containers of, or means for receiving, wound or laid thereon, thread and similar fabric, thin wire, or fibers of different nature, with the object and for the purpose of holding and retaining their outer ends, which devices at the same time afford a ready and simple means of and for severing or cutting off from the contents of such spools, or coils of thread, etc., any desired part of the same, more particularly in such a manner as to cause the holding or retaining of the outer end of the coil of thread as a more or less direct consequence of the severing of the same.

A further object of my invention is to provide etiicient and simple ways and means for firmly securing and attaching such and similar devices to spools or kindred articles.

In the drawing, Figure l is a side elevation, Fig. 2 an end View, and Fig. 3 a top view of a spool fitted with my thread cutting clip. Fig. 4 is a section on line A A of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a view of my invention shown detached, and Fig. 6 is a section on line B B of Fig. 5.

Referring now to the drawing, in which like characters of reference indicate like parts in all the views, a represents a spool, with thread, as b, wound thereon. Attached to one of the ends of the spool is the thread cutting clip, as C, arranged in such a manner that its part Z is bent over the periphery of the end of the spool, at right angles to the latter and to the main part of c, or nearly so, and presses lightly against said periphery, for the purpose of holding and retaining the end of the thread.

An incision, as e, Fig. 5, is provided be tween Z and c the end of which, as e', is formed to serve as the means for severing or cutting oif from the coil of thread a part of the same on drawing the latter into and along said incision toward e, as shown in Fig. 3 and forcing it against the cutting edge formed by e. After the thread has thus been cut, the newly formed end is then held against the periphery of the spool by part CZ, the latter possessing a degree of resiliency suflicient for that purpose.

Fig. 5 represents one of my thread cutting clips when blanked shown provided with two tongues, as z' z', and two slits, as 0 o, for receiving the tongues. These tongues are bent in two places in such a manner that the bends nearest the pointed ends of the tongues remain at the same angle after the tongues entered their slits, to be subsequently pressed or forced into the end piece of the spool, see Figs. 4t and 6. The tongues t' z', from their pointed ends to the bend nearest to the same, are curved to correspond to the circle or arc described by these ends to facilitate their passing into and through the slits o o, and to enter the end piece of spool a more or less obliquely, whereby the thread cutting clip is more firmly held or secured to the spool. The tongues may be arranged to diverge or converge and may be formed in any part of the article they are intended to fasten to' another article, of whatever description such articles may be, therefore I do not wish to confine myself to the particular constructional details shown, as they may be varied to snit certain requirements without changing the nature of my invention.

Having described my invention and in what manner the same may be carried into effect, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
