T all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN D. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Garbage-Can and Rubbish- Burner, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in a combined garbage can and rubbish burner, and the object is to render the garbage less offensive by subjecting it to heat whereby the contents of the can will be dried, and old rubbish such as newspapers, cardboard boxes and the like may be used as the fuel for drying the contents of the can.

A further object is to provide means for holding the can firmly in place and also for attaching the lid to the can and to permit of the lid being connected to the can so that it is slightly ajar from the can when the rubbish is being burned.

The invention consists of certain other novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a rear View; Fig. 3 is a sectional View; Fig. 4B is a View of the removable holder which supports the can; Fig. 5 is a view of the lug connected to the bottom of the can for locking it to the frame; and Fig. 6 is a detail.

A represents the frame, which is preferably cylindrical, and 1, l, are the rings forming the sides of the body or frame. Legs 3, 3, are connected to the rings for supporting the frame, and connected to the frame is a standard at, which is formed of a piece of metal, which is bent at about the

The sides are connected to the frame or rings 1, and are twisted between the top and center ring so that the ends of the sides lie against the center ring of the frame whereby the two side members, are connected to the center ring and one end of one of the side-members is offset from the frame, extends down and forms a leg 6 for the frame. A bolt 2 connects the lower ring with the side member or leg 6, and received on the bolt is a sleeve 2' for holding the leg from the ring to permit an ash pan being placed upon the lower rin Received within the frame is a closely woven wire basket 7, which is adapted to receive the rubbish to be burned, which rubbish is fed through an opening 8 in the removable lid 8 of tie basket. The basket is supported from the upper ring by hooks 9.

A can holder frame 10 is connected to the top of the frame A by means of hooks 11 and extends down within the frame over the basket 7, and the hooks form braces for the can in holding on the frame by extent: ing along the body of the can for a short distance.

A can 12 for the garbage is mounted upon the can holder frame, and along one edge of the can a forked lug 13 is connected. The forked portion of the lug extending beneath the upper ring 1 of the frame for locking the can in position. A hinge 14 connected at the upper end of the standard 4: is connected to the cover 15, which is received over the top of the can. A spiral spring 16 is connected to the standard and cover for holding the cover away and out of the path of the can when it is desired to remove the can from the frame or for the purpose of placing garbage into the can. A hasp 17 is connected to the cover and is provided with two openings 18, 18, which are received over a staple 19 on the can for locking the cover on the can. The lower opening in the hasp is to permit of the cover being held slightly above the top of the can when the rubbish is being burned in the basket 7 in the frame A for drying the contents of the can.

Handles

20, 20, are provided on the sides of the can for lifting it on and off from the frame A. Mounted on the lower ring of the frame is an ash receiving pan 21.

By this invention I am enabled to destroy all rubbish and at the same time use the heat from the burning rubbish for drying the contents of the garbage can, thereby relieving the offensive odors coming from damp and wet garbage, and in cold Weather preventing freezing and adhering of contents to the can. Again, it is an article which can be used in most any locality without any danger of fire being caused from the burning of the rubbish as flames are confined to a small radius by the close weave of wire basket, and the frame can be secured to the ground by having staples securing the legs of the frame to the ground, or instead of securing'the frame to the ground, it could be secured to a cement foundation.

It is evident that more or less slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction herein set forth, but

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A combined garbage can and rubbish burner comprising a frame, a can mounted on the frame, and a basket received in the frame beneath the can, said basket being covered and provided with an opening for the introduction of the material to be burned for drying the contents of the can.

2. A combined garbage can and rubbish burner, comprising a frame, a receptacle adapted to receive the material to be burned, a standard connected to the frame, a can mounted on the frame above the receptacle, and a cover hinged to the standard.

,3. A combined garbage can and rubbish burner, comprising a frame, a receptacle adapted to receive the material to be burned,

a standard connected to the frame, a can mounted on the frame above the receptacle, a cover hinged to the standard, and meansfor locking the cover to the can.

A combined garbage can and rubbish burner, comprising a frame, a basket received in the frame to receive the material to be burned, a holder mounted on the frame over the basket, a can received on the holder, means on the can for locking it in position, a standard connected to the frame, a spring controlled hinged cover connected to the standard and means for adjustably locking the cover to the can.

5. A combined garbage can and rubbish burner, comprising a frame having rings, legs for supporting the frame, a standard connected to the frame, a can mounted on the frame, a basket beneath the can for receiving the rubbish to be burned, a hinged cover connected to the standard, and means for locking the cover on the can.

6. A combined garbage can and rubbish burner, comprising a frame, a standard connected to the frame, a can mounted on the frame, a basket for receiving the rubbish to be burned, a hinged cover connected to the standard adapted to be received over the can, and means for fastening the frame to the earth or pavement.
