Letters Patent No. 94,000, dated August 24, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN QUADRANT-HING-E.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL Jones, of Lock port, in the county of Carroll, and State of Indiana," have invented an Improved Hinge for Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full'and exact description thereof, which will enable. those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
letters marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an edge view of the table-leaf, and a part. of the bed, with my hinge attached.
. Figure 2, a perspective view of the-bed-piece, with one wing of the hinge attached.
Figure 3, the leaf, with one wing attached.
Figure 4, an edge view of the leaf.
Figure 5, an edge view of the leaf and bed, with the leaf let down and broken away to show the con; struction of the hinge.
Figure 6, an end-view of the leaf shown at fig. 4, looking in the direction indicated by dart x z.
The present invention consists of'a detachable hinge, which is used more especially for hanging table-leaves, and which is provided with curved arms on one wing, overlooking a notched lug on the other wing,-as hereinafter fully described;
G represents the wing of that part of the hinge which is attached to the table-bed A, by screws H, in the usual manner, and wlnch is provided with curved arms 0 G, looking over a lug, D, attached to the wing K.
These arms 0 are so recessed out as to form shoulders J, near the wing G, and to form lugs I I on the ends of the arms.
Said lugs locking over shoulders F, formed on the lug D, prevent the leaf B* from being raised too high, or past a parallel plane with the top of the bed A, and said shoulders J J, striking against the lug D, preVent'the leaf B from striking against the legs of the table, when it is being let down.
To provide room for the curved arms O to operate, the wingK is-slotted out at L' L, figs. 3 and 5, and a recess is formed in the leaf B, before the w-ingK is fastened to it; and to hold the angle of the leaf and bed together when the leaf is let down, a lug, E, figs.
1 and 2, is formed on the wing G, and so arranged as to enter a'recess, G, fig. 6, formed in the inner side of the lug D.
The hinge should be made of malleable iron, or some other metal which is not easily broken, each wing, with its respective parts, being made of a single casting;
To remove the leaf B, bring it outward to line Z, then push back on its edge. i
By means of this construction and arrangement, a very suitable hinge is'provided at small cost, and at the same time answers a better purpose, especially where it is desirable that the leaf B be/readily detached.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent of the United States, is-
The wing G, provided with curved arms 0 and lug E, in combination with the wing K, provided with lug D and recess 0, as and for the purpose set forth.
