making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to revolving die-machines; and
consists briefly in the use `of friction-bands applied to the periphery of toothed rims in contact with pinionwheels, working upon screws to open and close the dies, while the Amachine is kept constantly in motion, thereby obviating the necessity for reversing or stopping the machine.
Also, in .the arrangement of stops to regulate the size to be cut, and in the use of die-blooks-to facilitate the changing and recuttiug of the dies.

The main die-casting is' solidly attachedto the faceplate of the mandrel, having slots or openings in which' the die-blocks are fitted' to slide.
Between the main die-casting and the face-plate, a toothed rim, with a ilange ou one side, is fitted -to revolve freely.; and upon the front part of the main diecasting, another toothed rim is fitted in like manner.
Between these toothed rims, at three several points opposite the dieblocks, areplaced pinion-wheels, in Contact with the toothedl rims. Said pinion-wheels have screw-threads cut through them to iit'the screws upon which they revolve, and are held in place by a band surrounding the main die-casting, having holes through which one end of the screws slide, while the other 'end of the screws is fast to the die-blocks.
The anges of the toothed rims meet together at the centre of the die and form a' continuous smooth surface,'around which passes the friction-bands, one end of each of said friction-bands being fast to the principal frame or casting, while the other ends are connected to the rock-shaft.
The front toothed rim and the dies areheld in place' by a plate fastened with screws to the main die-cast 1n v.
cIhe face-plate of the manrhel has a groove, in which are the stops to regulate the motion of the dies in opening and closing. One of said stops is'solidly attached to the toothedrim next to`faoe-plate.
Another stop is inserted in the groove of the faceplate, said stop being heldin place and adjustable therein by means of screws .passing through slots in Lthe face-plate.
A permanent stop is also placed in the groove of the' face-plate.
A shaft passes through the principal frame-casting at a right angle with the axis of the mandrel of the machine, having a handle or lever attached to'one end, and in the face of the other end, (which is enlarged for that purpose,) two pins are inserted, to which the friction-bands are attached.
The'mandrel, to which the die is fastened, extends through the principal frame-casting, and is driven b v means of a pulley or suitable gearing,
In the accompanying drawings, three cutting-dies only are shown, that being a desirable number; but I do not conine my claim to this number, as any other desired number may be used.
Its operation is as follows:
The machine heilig in motion, with the dies closed, the lever or handle moved one way, from an upright position, will close one of the friction-bands upon the periphery of one of. the toothed rims, holding it at rest a moment, while the die, still in motion, carrying with it the pinion-Wheels, causes them to revolve against the toothed'rim at rest, and upon the screws, said 'screws being held from turning by the die-blocks, to'
which they are attached, and the pinion-Wheels being held in place by the main die-casting and pressureband, causes the screws, by reason of the thread in the pinion-Wheels, to move outward and openthe dies, in like manner pressing the handle in the opposite drection will close the other friction-band upon the periphery of the other toothed rim, and the dies are again closed ready for use. v
When the die vis either opened or closed, which is known by the striking of the stops, the handle or lever is brought' to an upright position, and the whole die moves around as left by the friction-bands.
