SASH-LOCK.

Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1909.
Application filed April 2, 1909. Serial No. 487,501.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, HARALD NEBLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful improvements in Sash- Locks, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to sash locks, and one of the principal objects of the saine is to provide a. sash lock which will prevent a sash from being raised beyond a height sufficient to permit ventilation of the room, thus preventing thieves from raising the window farther than the limitin order to gain an entrance into the house.
Another object of the invention is to provide a burglar-proof sash lock in which the sash may be raised a limited height and in which the locking mechanism cannot be opcrated from the outside.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a burglar-proof sash lock in which the screws for fastening the lock in place are covered to prevent the removal of the lock by a thief desiring to gain an entrance.
rFliese and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,-
Figure 1 is aperspective view illustrating my sash lock in position for use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the sash and through a portion of the sash lock. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the upper end of the sash lock, barrel or keeper. Fig. et is a horizontal sectional view of the barrel or keeper.
Referring to the drawing, t-he numeral 1 designates the upper rail of the lower sash, and 2 is the lower rail of the upper sash. Connected at the side of the upper sash is a keeper or barrel 3, said keeper having at its upper end an inwardly bent prong l to prevent the entrance of a screw driver or other similar' implement for removing the barrel from the sash by an unauthorized person. The fastening screws 5 have their heads covered by means of a stud 6 which is connected to the barrel after the screws have been turned in the sash to hold the barrel in pl-ace.- The purpose of the stud 6 is to prevent an unauthorized person from turning out the screws 5, said stud serving to cover the heads so that a screw driver cannot be used until after the stud has been removed. The barrel 3 is provided with a base 7 which is secured by screws 8 to the lower rail 2 of the upper sash. The barrel has an opening 9 in the inner side thereof, and at the lower end of said barrel a sliding bolt 10 is mounted in the housing 11, said bolt being provided with a. spring 1Q, and a knob or button 18 connected to the bolt extends through a slot 1li in the housingl 11. A latch 15 is pivoted upon a bolt 10 extending through the latch and into a hollow base member 17, said bolt being provided with a nut 18 seated in a socket within the base member 17. rFhis base member is secured to the upper rail of the lower sash by means of screws 19, and said screws have their heads covered by means of studs 20 which are driven into the casting after the latter has been secured to the sash rail., thus preventing the removal of the screws by an unauthorized person. The pivotal bolt 1G of the latch 15 cannot be removed for the reason that the nut is inclosed within a housing. A linger piece 22 projects outward from the latch 15, and the inner end of said latch extends into the opening 9 in the barrel 3.
The op eration of my invention maybe briefly described as follows :The lower sash 1 may be raised until the latch 15 occupies a posi tion at the upper end of the opening 9 in the barrel 3, where it is stopped by the shoulder 23, or the upper sash may be lowered until said shoulder Q8 comes into contact with the latch 15. A person from the outside cannot raise the lower sash or lower the upper sash beyond the distance limited by the opening 9, nor can a person from the outside reach in through the opening thus provided and remove the sash lock either by means of a screw driver or other tool, and the stud 6 prevents the screws 5 from being removed. The latch 15 cannot be tampered with, because with a single hand the person desiring to gain an entrance cannot operate the bolt 10 and at the same time move the latch 15 upon its pivot.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a sash lock made in accordance with my invention provides a very secure means of holding the sash at a limited height so that an unauthorized person cannot from the outside gain an entrance, and from the inside the latch l5 may be swung upon its pivot 16, and the upper or lower sash may be moved freely.
I claim 1. A sash lock comprising a keeper having a prong at one end, a stud, fastening means covered by said stud to prevent the unauthorized removal of said keeper, and a pivoted latch engaging said keeper.
2. A sash lock comprsinga keeper secured to a sash and provided with a sliding bolt, a latch pivoted to a sash, said latch being held in locked position by said bolt, said keeper being provided with a prong at one end, a stud, and fastening means covered by said stud to prevent the unauthorized removal of the keeper.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
