ATTHNE YS CHARLES HENRY JOHNSON, OF PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA.
SEAL ATTACHMENT FOR LOCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1909.
Application filed March 13, 1909. Serial No. 483,137.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Petaluma, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Seal Attachment for Locks, of which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to seal attachments for locks, especially those locks used on suitcases, trunks, boXes for legal papers, jewel boxes and the like.
The object of this invention is to provide a device whereby a seal may be placed over the lock and the same covered up and protected, so that the lock itself cannot be unlocked without breaking the seal.
The invention further consists of the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specilication, in which like reference characters denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the device, showing the seal attachment on the plate of a lock; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a view of the back of the plate of a lock, showing the means of fastening and locking the seal attachment to the lock-plate; Fig. l is an enlarged section on the line 4 1 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3, showing the means of locking the seal attachment to the lock-plate.
Referring more particularly to the separate parts of the device, 1 indicates a lock of any usual construction; 2 represents a coverplate pivot-ally secured to the plate of the lock by a concealed hinge 3. This hinge 3 is of such a form and so located behind the plate of the lock that it cannot be picked from the outside. The cover-plate 2 has a key-hole opening 5 therein, through which a key may be inserted into the key-hole opening` 6 in the plate of the lock. The opening 5 in the cover 2 is adapted to be closed by means of a protector 7. This protector is of any suitable form, but prefer'- ably is hinged to the cover 2 at one end by means of a pin 8, and is turned up at the other end slightly, as shown at 9 in Fig. 4. This turned-up end 9 permits it to be easily caught hold of to revolve it about its pivot 8.
Just above the turned-up portion 9 on the `protector 7, is an indentation 10 on its under The pins 8, 11 and 12 pass through the cover 2 and have sharpened points 13 which are adapted to pierce through a seal 14e placed between the cover and the lock. These points 13 after passing through the seal 14 engage in recesses in the front of the lockplate, as at l5. Thus, these pins serve the double function of forming supports and locks for the protector 7 and for holding the seal in place. This seal 14 may be of any suitable material, such as wax or paper, and is adapted to be placed between the cover and the lock proper so as to protect the latch or key-hole in said lock.
The cover 2 has a latch 16 (see Fig. 5), which passes through an opening in the seal and lock and is adapted to be engaged by a locking-member 17 pivotally secured at 18 to the inner surface of the lock-plate. The locking-member 17 has a downwardlyextending portion 19 which engages the latch 1G and prevents it from being withdrawn. This locking-member 17 is also slidingly held by a pin 2O fastened into the lock-plate, which engages a slot 2l in the locking-member. A spring 22, suitably secured to the lock-plate, engages the lockingmember 17 and holds it in such a position that it will automaticallyengage the latch 1G.
At the top of the key-hole opening 6 in the lock-plate is a collar 23 which prevents the locking-member 17 from being lifted oil' the latch 16 by the means of a wire.
In the operation of the device, the box or other receptacle is firstlocked, then the key removed and a seal of any suitable form placed over the opening. Then the cover 2 is closed and the pin-points 13 pierce the seal and hold it in place, and the cover is automatically locked in its closed position, as
shown in full lines in Fig. 2. In order to open the lock, or even to get at the seal, the lock itself must be first unlocked, and this can only be done by breaking through the seal. The cover-plate 2 is made with a very slight bevel on its inner surface, to permit room for the seal and at the same time fit closely to the surface of the lock-plate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. In a device of the class described, the combination with a lock, of a seal for said lock, a cover for said seal having an opening therein, a protector for said opening, means adapted to hold said protector over the opening, and a lock adapted to engage said protector when in its position away from the opening and also adapted to hold it in such position.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a lock, of a seal for said lock, a cover for said seal, having an opening therein, a protector for said opening, and a pivot-pin for said protector, adapted to hold the seal in place.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a lock, of a seal for said lock, a cover for said seal, having an opening therein, a protector for said opening, a pin adapted to support said protector and to pierce said seal, a pin adapted to hold said protector over the opening and to pierce said seal, and a pin adapted to hold said protector away from the opening and to pierce said seal.
L In a device of the class described, the combination with a lock having a front plate, of a seal for said lock, and a cover for said seal having a concealed hinge located behind the front plate.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a lock having a front plate, of a seal for said lock, a cover for said seal having a concealed hinge located behind the front plate, and means for locking said cover to the lock.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination with a lock having a front plate, of a seal for said lock, a cover for said seal, a concealed hinge located behind the front plate adapted to connect said cover to said lock, and means for locking said cover to said lock.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination with a lock having a key-hole therein, a seal for said lock, a cover for said seal, hinged to said lock, said cover having a key-hole therein corresponding to the keyhole in the loclnia protector for said keyhole, pivoted to said cover, means for locking said protector over the key-hole and a piii adapted to engage said protector and hold it awayl from the key-hole, a latch on said cover, a-lockiiig-member on said lock, adapted to engage said lock, and means for forcing said locking member intoengagement with said latch.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination with a lock, of a seal for said lock, a cover for said seal having an opening therein, a protector for said opening, a pin on said cover adapted to support said protector and to pierce said seal, and a pin on said cover adapted to hold said protector over the opening and to pierce said seal.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination with a lock, of a seal for said lock, a cover for said seal having an opening therein, a protector for said opening, a pin on said cover adapted to support saidprotector, and a pin on said cover adapted to hold said protector away from the opening and to pierce said seal. Y Y
10. In a device of the class described, the combination with a lock, of a seal for said lock, a cover for said seal having an opening therein, a protector for said opening, a pinr on said cover adapted to support said protector and to pierce said seal, and a pin on said cover adapted to hold said protector awzliy from the opening and to pierce said sea In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificationY in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES HENRY JOHNSON.
