MICHAEL W. CUMMINGS AND JAMES F. JORDAN, OF OLYPHANT, PENNSYLVANIA.
CARD-CASE OR POCKET-BOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 14, 1908.
Patented Nov. 9, 1969.
Serial No. 443,536.
T 0 all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that we, MICHAEL V. CUM- MINGS and JAMns F. JORDAN, citizens of the United States, residents of Olyphant, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have made a certain new and useful Invent-ion in Card-Cases or Pocket- Books; and we declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case without the insertion or lining leaf, the folds being shown as partly open. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the case without the lining leaf, one of the pockets being shown as opened for purpose of illustration of the folds. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the case with the insertion or lining leaf in place. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the case complete. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of the insertion leaf. Fig. 6 is a plan view of one side of the blank. Fig. '7 is a plan view of the other side of the blank. Fig. 8 is a plan View of a modified form of case having no overlapping folds at the center.
The invention relates to card cases or pocket books having for its object certain improvements upon the invention disclosed in the Patent No. 522,152, dated June 26, 189%, with a view of adapting the device for use as card case or pocket. book.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the letter (1;, designates the blank for the card case, which is of rectangular form having when folded the same crea or general arrangement of folds as the patent referred to, such folds, however, taking up or including a larger portion of the blank, whereby when the blank is folded the locking folds c, 0, at opposite sides will be of general triangular form, preferably overlapping at their adjacent or meeting edges at o, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. At the same time the end pockets (Z, d, which are designed for the reception of the cards or other articles of flat nature, are caused to approach more nearly together in the manner of the ordinary card case.
In order to cover and protect the folds which meet in the center of the case, and at the same time hold such folds down flat. an insertion leaf 6, is employed, said leaf being of rectangular form of the same general size as the case and being adapted to be inserted within the end pockets aforesaid, when the case is complete.
lVhile the overlapping folds c, 0 are preferred as serving to strengthen the back of the case and preventing buckling thereof, still the folds do not necessarily overlap, but may simply meet, as shown in Fig. 8, of the drawings. The insertion leaf 6, may have triangular end folds c, c, which are adapted to be turned backward and fit behind the locking folds aforesaid to prevent such leaf from being readily pulled out of place.
In Fig. 6, of the drawing, the blank for the case, having the overlapping folds 0, 0, is shown, said blank having upon the inside thereof two centrally arranged parallel lines 2z-, which are arranged adjacent to each other and are parallel to opposite sides 2, z, of the blank, each side 2, being designed to be first folded to the line .2, farthest therefrom. At right angles to lines .2, e, in the central portion of the blank are two parallel adjacent lines g parallel to the other sides 3 y, of the blank, each side y being next folded to the line 3 nearest thereto.
The creases dividing the triangular folds at the corners being formed, the triangular fold C, at each corner is folded beneath the locking fold 0, the triangular fold D, being folded upon such locking fold, in this manner the pockets (Z, (Z, being formed. The pockets (Z, (Z are cut away slightly at d, d, at their inner edges to admit of the ready insertion therein of the leaf 7", and of the cards or other flat articles.
In order to conveniently and quickly make the triangular folds at the corners of the blank, it is only necessary to mark the diagonal line 50, dividing the triangular folds C and D at each corner upon the rear face or back of the blank, as shown in Fig. '4", of the drawing.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent -is 1. A card case, comprising a body portion, side portions folded thereupon, double triangular portions folded under the side portions at each corner, end portions folded upon said body and side portions, and triangular portions folded under the end porfor said double triangular portions, and
means for covering and protecting the folds and keeping them in position including an insertion leaf for said pocket-s.
A card case, comprising a body portion, side port-ions folded thereupon, double triangular portions folded under said side portions at each corner, end portions folded upon said body and said side portions, and triangular portions folded under the end portions and upon the side portions to form end pockets, said side portions being about one half the width of said body portion and said end portions being of such width that when folded they are separated by a narrow interval, and an insertion cover and protector strip for the folds adapted for iiisertion in said pockets.
3. A card case, comprising a body portion, side portions folded thereupon, double triangular portions folded under the side portions at each corner, end portions folded upon said body and side portions, and triangular portions folded under the end portions and upon the side portions to form end pockets, said side portions being about one half the width of said body portion and end portions being of such width that when folded they are separated by a narrow interval, and an insertion cover and protector strip for the folds.
4. A card case, comprising a body portion, side portions folded thereupon, double triangular portions folded under the side portions at each corner, end portions folded upon said body and side portions, and triangular portions folded under the end portions and upon the side portions to form end pockets, said side portions overlapping at their meeting edges, and said end portions being of such width that when folded they are separated by a narrow interval, and an insertion cover and protector strip for the folds, having locking end folds adapted for insert-ion behind said double triangular portions.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
