CLOSURE-REMOVING DEVICE FOR RECEPTAGLES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HOMER E. SHEPARD, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closure- Removing Devices for Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifica tion, and to the referencennmerals marked thereon.

The present invention relates to closure removing devices for receptacles of the type in which the closure snugly fits the receptacle and with the latter is made of sheet material that prevents the parts being grasped and separated easily by the hands, such for instance as paste boxes for blacking or the like; one object of the invention being to provide a removing device which shall be inexpensive to manufacture and simple in operation, and another object being to provide an improved handle for the receptacle.

To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical section of a receptacle embodying this invention with the closure in closed position thereon; Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the removing device shifted to elevate the closure; and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of another embodiment of the invention.

Referring more particularly to drawings 1 indicates the receptacle and 2 the closure or cover therefor, both being preferably made from sheet material and the closure fitting in this instance over the exterior of the receptacle.

In order to remove the closure there is provided a slide mounted on one of the parts and cooperating with the other. In this instance the slide is in the form of a movable or collapsible handle for the receptacle and comprises preferably a U shaped member 8 having one arm guided in a groove 4 on the under surface of the receptacle and held in the groove by a sleeve 5. portion arranged to cause the separation of the parts when the slide is moved. In this instance, the inclined portion is formed by providing the closure with a continuous or annular bevel or incline 7 which is engaged by portion 6 when the slide is withdrawn, the slide when the box is not in use having its portion 6 lying within the central elevated portion of the closure. The annular bevel permits the closure to be fitted to the receptacle without first determining a certain relative position between the inclined portion and the slide, the only requirement being that the latter be pushed in. In Fig. 3 the cover or closure is provided with an additional annular inclined or beveled portion 8 which is arranged beyond portion 7 and in diverging relation thereto, in order to permit the closure to be fitted to the receptacle while the handle is withdrawn and at the same time to permit the handle to remove the closure when moved inwardly.

It is of course apparent that the handle presents novel features independent of its cover removing function, its two arms being strongly braced by reason of its novel mounting and being limited in their outward movement by the turned portion 6. The upper arm does not interfere with the removal of the contents of the receptacle, as the contents preferably onl extend to the plane of the under surface of the arm.

A device constructed as described prevents accidental removal of the cover due to jars or blows on the slide, it being necessary to positively withdraw the handle to effect the removal. The removing device serving also as a handle prevents the soiling of the users hands in the opening of the box or in the use thereof after the opening.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination with a receptacle and a closure therefor, of a slide guided on one of said parts in a straight line and having a portion cooperating with the other to cause their separation.

2. The combination with a receptacle and a closure therefor, of a slide guided on one of said parts in a straight line, and a bevel portion on the other with which the slide cooperates to separate the closure from the receptacle.

3. The combination with a receptacle, and

a closure therefor, of a handle arranged in an inner position on the receptacle, slidable outwardly to a projected position and having a portion adapted to cooperate with the closure on the outward movement to cause it to open.

at. The combination with a receptacle and a closure therefor, of a handle carried by the receptacle movable to an inner and an outer position thereon, and an annular beveled portion on the closure with which the handle is adapted to cooperate on its movement to open the receptacle.

The combination with a receptacle and a closure therefor, of a handle comprising a U shaped slide having one arm guided on the bottom of the receptacle and the other arm guided through the vertical wall thereof.

6. The combination with a receptacle and a closure therefor, of a handle comprising a U shaped member having one arm guided on the bottom of the receptacle, the other arm guided through the vertical wall thereof and carrying a portion adapted to cooperate with the closure to remove the same from the receptacle.

'7. The combination with a receptacle and a closure therefor having an annular beveled or inclined portion, of a slide carried by the receptacle having a portion to cooperate with the inclined portion to remove the-closure.

8. The combination with a receptacle and a closure, of oppositely arranged beveled or inclined portions on one of said parts and a movable device carried by the other part to cooperate with one of said beveled portions on its movement in each direction in order to separate the receptacle and its closure.

9. The combination with a receptacle and a closure therefor having oppositely arranged annular inclined or beveled portions, and a slide carried by the receptacle and adapted to cooperate with one of said beveled portions on its movement in each direction.

10. The combination with a receptacle and a closure therefor, having an annular beveled portion on its top wall away from its edge, of a movable member carried by the receptacle and cooperating with said annular beveled portion to separate the closure from the receptacle.

11. The combination with a receptacle and a closure therefor, of a member movable to an inner and to an outer position on one of said parts and having a portion cooperating with the other of said parts on movement of said member to the inner and the outer positions to effect the separation of the closure from the receptacle.
