To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. PENoE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greeneville, in the county of Greene and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to lanterns, and is primarily directed to that class of collapsible paper lanterns used for display and ornaments, and the principal object of the invention is to provide the base or bottom of a lantern of this character with a removable candle holding portion or member, whereby the candle may be readily removed or positioned within the lantern without necessitating the removal of the lantern from its hung position.

With the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progrosses, the invention risides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing, there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the invention, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a lantern provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a section upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

In the drawing the numeral 1 designates a paper lantern of any ordinary construction having its lower edges inturned to provide offset members 2, adapted to be secured to a disk 3. The disk 3 is preferably constructed of card board or other suitable heavy paper and is centrally provided wit-h a reduced opening l. Integrally constructed upon or suitably connected with the bottom face of the disk 3 and of a circumferonce equal to that of the said disk is what I term a ring member 5. The inner edge of the ring 5 is positioned a suitable distance away from the opening I of the disk and the space provided by the inner surface of the ring 5 is adapted for the reception of a candle holding member or disk 6.

The periphery of the disk 3, ring 5, candle holding member 6, as well as the wall provided by the opening 4: and the inner face of the ring 5 are all concentric with each other, and the holding member 6 is retained in position upon the under face of the disk 3 through the medium of a plurality of metallic resilient buttons 9. These buttons 9 are preferably of a diamond shape and have one of their ends secured to the ring 5 through the medium of a suitable pin 8, while their opposite ends are adapted to be rotated beneath the member 6 to sustain the said member upon the bottom of the lantern.

By reference to the several figures of the drawing, it will be noted that the buttons 9 have their engaging'faces slitted to provide upwardly extending tongues 7 which effectively engage the said member 6 to sustain the same immovably against the under face of the disk 3.

In placing a candle within the lantern 1, the candle is first positioned centrally upon the candle holding member (5, it being understood that the said holding member has been previously moved from the bottom of the lantern by rotating the buttons 9 to bring the same out of contact of the said member 6. The holder 6 is then positioned within the ring 5 and is brought to bear upon the under face of the disk 3, the candle being inserted through the opening l. The buttons 9 are then rota-ted so as to engage the under face of the member 6 and the said member is thereby retained securely upon the bottom of the lantern.

Having thus described the invention what I claim as new is 1. The combination with a lantern of the class set forth, of a base for said lantern, said base comprising a disk having a central reduced opening, a peripheral ring member upon its under face, a candle holding member adapted to be positioned within the ring member, and resilient securing members pivotally connected with the ring member adapted to engage the under face of the buttons pivotally connected with the ring member adjacent to its inner edge, said buttons being each provided with an upturned tongue, and a candle supporting disk adapted to be positioned Within the ring member and to be contacted by the re silient buttons.
