COMBINATION LANTERN AND HEATER. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1909.
Application filed March 15, 1909. Serial No. 483,397.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER H. ARMING- TON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cumberland, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Lanterns and Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination lantern and heater and consists in an attachment for a lantern adapted to support a dinner pail or other vessel for the purpose of heating the contents thereof, but at the same time so constructed as not substantially to afl'ect the appearance of the lantern, nor its dimensions, nor its usefulness and effectiveness as an ordinary lantern.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate my invention,-Figure 1 is a side view of a lantern havingmy improved attachment applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of said attachment and part of the upper end of the lantern; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side view of said attachment and upper end of the lantern showing the lid open; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of said attachment showing the lid open.
The lantern proper shown in Fig. 1 is an ordinary form of lantern of the type having a tubular chimney a of sheet metal. The chimney a is provided with integral upwardly extending arms or projections 0; which carry the grating for supporting the vessel to be heated. The grating consists of an outer annulus or ring I), an inner annulus or ring I) and the radial bars Z7 connecting the same and projecting above the plane of b and Z). The arms a are made of flexible sheet metal and their ends are bent over the annulus b as shown at c thus holding the grating above the top of chimney a but spaced therefrom. The annulus b is provided at opposite sides with pairs of lugs 6 b forming between them bearing surfaces for the purpose hereinafter described.
0 is a cover or lid, of substantially the same diameter as the grating, having secured to its under side a metal strip 0, bent at one end as at c to form a hinge with the bearing surface between one pair of lugs 6 b and at its other end to form a resilient catch of which engages the bearing surface between the opposite air of lugs 6 6 The lid 0 may be provided with a-handle 0 It will be noticed that the lid 0 when in closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, rests upon the upward projecting bars 6 thus leaving an air space between the annulus Z) and the lid, and insuring sufiicient space between the top of the chimney a and the lid to aiford a good draft without so far elongating the sheet metal arms a as to affect the rigidity and strength of the device. The radial bars 6 similarly support the vessel to be heated, when the lid 0 is thrown back as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, at the same time insuring sufiicient space under said vessel to afford a good draft.
I claim:
1. In combination with a lantern having a tubular chimney, a plurality of arms projecting upwardly from the upper end of said chimney, a grating secured to and upheld by said arms and spaced from the end of said chimney, and a lid removably covering said grating.
2. In combination with a lantern having a tubular sheet metal chimney provided with a plurality of integral arms projecting upwardly from the upper edge thereof, a grating upheld by said arms and spaced from the end of said chimney said arms bent to engage and hold said grating, and a lid removably covering said grating.
3. In combination with a lantern having a tubular chimney, a plurality of arms projecting upwardly from the upper end of said chimney, a grating secured to and upheld by said arms, said grating comprising an inner and an outer ring connected together by bars extending above the plane of said outer and inner rings, and a lid removably covering said grating and in its closed position resting on said bars and spaced from said rings.
4. In combination with a lantern having a tubular chimney, a plurality of arms projecting upwardly from the upper end of said chimney, a grating secured to and upheld by said arms, said grating comprising an inner ring to which said arms are secured, and an outer ring, said rings connected with radial bars, and a lid hinged to said outer ring.
5. In combination with a lantern having a tubular sheet metal chimney provided with a plurality of integral arms projecting upwardly from the upper edge thereof, a grating comprising an inner ring and an outer ring connected by radial bars, said arms bent to engage said inner ring and hold of Providence, State of Rhode Island, this said grating above said chimney and spaced eleventh day of March 1909.
therefrom and a lid hinged at one ed 'e to 7 T n 7 said 0uter ring and provided at its opp osite ER ARMIBGlOB' edge With a resilient catch adapted to en- Vitnesses:
gage said outer ring. ELMER S. CHASE,
Signed by me at Providence in the county HENRY C. CRAM.
