PROTECTOR FOR CARBOYS.

To all whom it may concern:

citizen of the United States, residing in South Acton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Protectors for Carboys, of which the following description, in con nection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to carboys and like vessels and has for its object to provide the same with a simple, durable and inexpensive protector for the necks of the glass bottles. The protector referred to is composed of a plurality of members, which inclose the neck of the bottle under normal conditions and which are constructed so as to uncover the neck of the bottle and permit the liquid contents of the bottle to be poured, while the protector remains attached to the box containing the bottle.

These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

Figure 1 is an elevation of a carboy with parts broken away and provided with a protector for the neck of the bottle. Fig. 2, a plan of the carboy shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 8, an elevation of the carboy with the members of the protector nested and in condition to uncover the neck of the bottle. Fig. 4, an elevation of the carboy with the protector turned down so as to uncover the neck of the bottle, and Fig. 5, a detail in section to be referred to.

Referring to the drawing, (4 represents the box and b the cover therefor, of a carboy of any suitable or usual construction, whose the box, with its neck projecting above the cover 6 through an opening (Z therein.

The parts as thus far described may be of any suitable or desired construction, such for instance as now commonly used for holding acids and other liquids.

The present invention has for its object to the neck 0 of the bottle contained in the box or casing 64, and in the present instance, I have shown one construction of guard or protector, which is simple, durable, inexpensive and which is attached to the cover so as to protect the neck 0 of the bottle from being broken in transportation and which is capable of being readily moved into a position I SO as to UHCOVQI tilt, neck 0 when is de- Be kllOWIlllltlt l FRANK LOTIIROP it 7 7 sired to pour the liquid contents of the bottle or to fill the bottle with the liquid.

The protector or guard herein shown is composed of a plurality of members f, 9, preferably metal strips or bands, which are bent or shaped to form two substantially arch-shaped bands arranged substantially at right angles to each other, each band or strip comprising as herein shown upwardly inclined legs 10 and a cross top piece 12 joining the said legs. a

The members f, g of the guard or protector may and preferably will be permanently attached to the cover Z) of the box a and in the present instance, the legs 10 of the member f are pivoted at 13 to lugs or ears 14 on plates or pieces 15 secured as by screws 16 to the cover 7) on substantially diametrically opposite sides of the opening (Z therein, and the legs 10 of the member 9 are detachably secured to the cover sub stantially at right angles to the pivoted legs of the member f. For this purpose, the legs 10 of the'member g are provided at their ends with inturned fingers 18, which are designed to engage the under sides of clips fastened to the cover, said clips comprising a raised portion or cross piece 19 connecting upright portions 20 having extended from them ears 21, which are fastened to the cover Z) by screws 22 or otherwise.

The member 9 of the protector is preferably pivotally connected with the member by a pin or rivet 24 passed through the cross bars 12, so that the member 9 which is detachably connected with the cover I) may be disengaged from the clips 19 and then turned on the pivot 24 so as to substantially coincide with the member f as represented in Fig. 3, after which the nested members may be turned on the pivots 13 down into substantially the position shown in Fig. 4, thereby uncovering the neck of the bottle and leaving it in condition for pouring out the contents or for filling the bottle with the liquid.

I may prefer to pivotally attach one member to the cover 6, as the guard or protector is thus permanently secured to the carboy, and liability of losing or misplacing the protector is avoided, but it is not desired to limit the invention in this respect, as both members may be detachably secured to the carboy in the same manner as the member 9 is secured. which case the cross bars 12 of the members will not be riveted but may be frictionally engaged with each other so as not to interfere with the said members being turned down on their pivots.

From the above description, it will be seen that in the normal or operative position of the protector or guard, represented in Fig. 1, the neck of the bottle is protected against being struck by objects and losses from this source are avoided.

I have herein shown the protector as applied to the cover of the box or casing inclosing the bottle, but it is not desired to limit the invention in this respect as it can be readily applied to boxes or cases containing bottles and not provided with a cover, such for instance as carboys containing mineral or spring water.

Claims.

1. The combination with a carboy provided with a cover having an opening through which the neck of the bottle projects, of a guard for the neck of the bottle attached to said cover and comprising members extended substantially at right angles to each other over the neck of the bottle and one of which is pivotally secured to said cover and the other pivotally secured to the first-mentioned member and detachably secured to said cover, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a carboy p rovided with a cover having an opening.

through which the neck of the bottle projects, of a guard for the neck of the bottle comprising members extended substantially at right angles to each other over the neck of the bottle, and one of which is detachably secured at its lower ends to said cover, substantially as described.

3. The combination with a carboy provided with a cover having an opening through which the neck of the bottle projects, of a guard for the neck of the bottle comprising members extended substantially at right angles to each other over the neck of the bottle, and one of which is pivotally secured at its lower ends to said cover, substantially as described.

4. The combination with a box or casing containing a bottle whose neck projects above the said casing, of a guard for the neck of the bottle comprising substantially archshaped members extended substantially at right angles to each other over the neck of the bottle and one of which members is detachably secured at its lower ends to the box to permit said member to be moved so as to enable the neck of the bottle to be accessible, substantially as described.
