Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CoNsTAN'rINn C. SGHELL, citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Oliver, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Poles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to curtain-poles, and has for its object the provision of a simple,

effective and practically inexpensive struc-- ture of this character for the suspension and readily connecting and disconnection of the curtain, as well as to dispense with the employment of rings or other extraneous fastenings of any kind, said pole being more particularly adapted for service with boxcurtains.

To these ends my invention consists in certain novel features as will hereinafter be more particularly described in the accompanying specification and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification, Figure I, is a perspective view of my improved pole showing its application to a curtain. Fig. II, is a longitudinal or plan view of the two pole sections disconnected. Fig. III, is a front view of the assembled pole sections. Fig. IV, is a plan view of a fragmentary portion of the pole and curtain engaged thereby, and Fig. V, is a transverse sectional view through the pole and curtain, in all of which views similar detail parts are designated by numerals of like character.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a pole longitudinally divided, through the center, into two sections l and 2, the section 1 being the pole proper and adapted to be supported upon the customary brackets carried by the window-frame, and the section 2 the complementary or locking part, between which sections the curtain engages and is held in its suspended position.

In the structure of the pole, it will be observed that the ends 2 of the section 2, are tapered in both directions` in a manner similar to the ordinary dove-tail, and the shouldered portions l of the pole proper correspondingly tapered, so that when the two sections are placed together they form the complete pole, the section 2 being wedged in position and so held.

In applying the curtain to the pole, said curtain is placed over the pole section l, after which the section 2 is placed in position with the curtain therebetween, and if it be a curtain of greater width than the'window or pole length, or a box curtain, for which the pole is more particularly intended, the outer sides of the curtain will be engaged between the tapered meeting surfaces of the two sections, as shown at Figs. I and V, thereby turning the outer 'sides of the curtain at approximately right angles to the curtain proper. By securing the curtain to the pole in this manner it will be readily apparent that the section 2 not only has a binding effect upon the curtain longitudinally but will even more effectually bind the curtain between the tapered meeting surfaces of the two sections, holding the curtain in the box form, as previously set forth.

Having thus shown and described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A pole for suspending box curtains, comprising a member divided longitudinally between its points of support into a pole proper and a dove-tailed clamping section fitted thereto, said clamping section having its ends tapered downwardly toward one another, as well as rearwardly toward one another, the shouldered portion of the pole proper being correspondingly tapered to receive said clamping section, said pole adapted to secure the front portion of the curtain between the longitudinal surfaces of the pole proper and attending section and its sides between the tapered surfaces thereof. so as to cause the curtain sides to be projected rearwardly at approximately right angles to the front portion, substantially as shown and set forth.
