Be it known that I, J oHN S. THUnMaN, a 'tizen of the United States, residing at Los ngeles, in the county of Los Angeles and tate of California, have invented new and seful Improvements in Erasers, of which 1e following is a specification.
This invention consists in the construction f an eraser to combine a reciprocating or rward movement of the eraser with a roiry movement thereof. By means of this ouble motion an erasure may be made uiclrly and evenly and in an etlicient maner which is impossible with either of the lotions taken singly. To this end I employ guide which forces the eraser to be operted by the hand in a straight line and thus ontines its action to the desired area and 1e eraser is rotated by virtue of its reciproal movement on the guide, any convenient onnecting means being employed.
I accomplish the above by means of the evice described herein and illustrated in ie accompanying' drawings, in which Figure 1,- is a perspective view of my nproved eraser. Fig. 2,- is an enlarged ross section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings designates a ectang'ular guide frame which may be contructed of any suitable material and which provided with a longitudinal slotted 'uideway G in its upper face. This guide- 'ay extends approximately the whole length f the frame and is adapted to carry a slider mounted therein. Slider 7 is provided 'ith linger tabs 8 which are adapted to be `i'asped by the operator so that the slider' lay be reciprocated in the guideway.
J ournaled in a vertical bore 9 in the lower art and at one side of the slider 7 is a tud 10 which carries on its lower end a referably hollow cylindrical eraser holder' 1"'adapted to hold an eraser 12. A spring 3 presses downwardly against a washer 14: 'hich is secured to the upper end of stud 10 `nd holds eraser 12 in resilient contact with he surface of paper 15 on which an erasure s desired to be made. The pressure of this pring may be regulated by the adjustment f a screw cap 1G above the spring so that .he eraser presses with the proper force gainst the surface of the paper. A small 'ear 17 is rigidly mounted on stud 10 and ieshes with a gear 18 which is mounted on Specification of Letters Patent.

The construction above set forth provides a means for directing the eraser in a. straight line and for confining its action to a given space and also provides for the rotation of the eraser while it is being reciprocated. By means of the combination of these two movements an erasure is quickly and etliciently consummated without excessive abrasure of the surface at any particular point, the eraser acting evenly and uniformly on the area over which it passes.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class described, comprising a frame provided with a guideway, a slide adapted to reciprocate in said guideway, a spring pressed eraser holder rotatively mounted on said slide, and gear connections between said frame and holder to rotate said eraser holder.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a frame, a slide mounted on said frame, a rotatable spring pressed eraser holder mounted on said slide, and gear connections between said eraser holder and said frame vto rotate said eraser holder.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a frame provided with aguide-way, a slide adapted to reciprocate in said guideway, an eraser holder rotatively mounted on said slide, gear connections between said frame, slide, and holder to rotate said eraser holder, and means to automatically feed said holder downwardly as the abrasive substance is worn away.
