SHARPENING DEVICE.
Application filed. January 13, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, Dnsinu Lonoun'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fail-field, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in sharpening devices and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with shears, scissors, or the like; and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including an abrading surface and a guide member adjustable relatively to said surface.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved sharpening device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensiveand otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein V Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a sharpening device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through the device as disclosed in Fig. 1 with the elongated member shown in fragment; and
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of the device as herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated member serving as ahandle and having one end portion provided witha cross head 2 which afiords a mounting or seat for the abrading or sharpening element 3.
Immediately adjacent the cross head 2 and to the rear thereof the member 1 is provided with the transversely spaced ears 4 support ing the pintle 5. Mounted for rocking movement upon the pintle 5 is a block 6, the forward or outer face 7 of which being disposed on a predetermined bevel, while the rear face Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 142,309.
of said block 6 has extending therefrom the spaced arms 8 having their outer end portions bifurcated, as at 9, in order that said arms 8 may straddle the member 10 extending from the elongated member 1. 7
Threaded upon the member 10 and interposed between, the arms 8 is the wheel 11 whereby it will be perceived that as said wheel 11 is adjusted longitudinally of the member 10, the block'6 may be caused to rock in accordance with the necessities of practice. V l
In use the blade or the like to be shar ened is placed against the beveled face 7 of the block 6 and by adjusting the wheel 11 it will be perceived that the edge of the blade to be sharpened may be adjusted relative to the abradingor sharpening element 3 as may be required.
The upper portion of the block 6 is provide-cl with the forwardly directed spaced ears 12 overlying the beveled face 7 of the block and between which is mounted, through the medium of the pintle 14, the rock arm 15. The lower or inner end of said arm 15 is provided with the inwardly directed bearings 16 between which is rotatably mounted the tapered roller l7 adapted to contact with the outer face of the blade to be sharpened, whereby it will be perceived that the relative movement of the sharpening device and the blade may be had with a minimum of frictional resistance.
The pintle 14 engages the rock arm 15 and the outer end portion of said rock arm 15 is bifurcated, as at 18, to afi'ord a seat for the outer extremity of the flat spring 19 which serves to constantly urge the inner end portion of the rock, arm 15 in a direction toward the beveled face 7 of the block 6.
The intermediate portion of the fiat spring 19 is coiled about a pin 20 engaged with the upstanding ears 21 carried by the block 6, and the inner or lower portion of said spring19 is extended and contacts with the upper surface of the block 6 in a manner and for a purpose which is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a sharpening device constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and com paratively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility. with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my inventlon is susceptible of some -change and modification Without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described including a member provided With a sharpening element, a block supported by the member and positioned in proximity to the sharpening element, a rock arm carried by the block and overlying a face thereof, the portion of the rock arm overlying a face of the block being provided with anti-friction means, and means for constantly urging said portion of the rock arm in a direction toward the block.
2. A sharpening device including a mem ber provided with a sharpening element a block supported by the member for rocking movement and positioned in proximity to through the slots ot the arms, and a Wheel A threaded upon the last named member and positioned between the arms whereby the movement of the Wheel longitudinally of the second named member serves to rock the block.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my signature in the presence of tWO Witnesses.
