Description

str ut Letters Patent N 93,823, dated' August 17, 1869.
IMPRovEMeN'r 1N RUBBER ERAsERs.
'.[he Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the seine.
To all whom it may concern l Be it knownthat l, SAMUEL D.,Hovnr, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and Stateof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Poeket-Erasers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and Vexact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, ina-king part of this specicationnand to the letters 0f reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To-enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention relates to rubber used as al1-eraser of pen or.penoil-marks;`aml i It consists iuso arranging'suclr rubber with a case lthat it can be shoved in or out at pleasure, and thus be carried in the pocket, wit-hout danger of soiling it, as hereinafter explained.
Figure l represents my improved device ready for use.
Figure 2 represents the same, atta-climi to an ordinary wood lead-pencil.
Figure 3 represents the same closed, as carried in the pocket. 7
It has become customary, and is very convenient for 'business men, to carry in their pocket a small piece of vulcanized rubber, to be used as an eraser, the most convenient and approved form vbeing` that of a small roll. Then thus/ used, the rubber, by being .carried in the pocket, is very apt to become more or less soiled, and then, when used, it smears and soils the paper on .wliieli it is used. lt is to prevent this, and provide a nice article as a' pocket-eraser, that my invention is intended.
In constructing my device, I first provide the rubber eraser, as represented by R of the drawings, and then provide for it a case, A., having'a-,ring, B, connected to audoperating a slide inside, the rubber being connected to and moving- With the slide iu the same manner that pen and pencil-cases are made, and as shown in the drawings.
This case Amay be made ot" a size just sullii-ient to contain the rubber when drawn in, as shown in iin'. 3, and extended in tig. l, or it may be made longer, with' its opposite end left open, also, so that it can be slipped on to the end of an ordinary wood lead-pencil, as shown in tig. 2. I 4
lhe case maybe made of metal, hard rubber, or an y other suitable material, and in any desired style to suit thefaucy.-
An eraser thus made is admirably adapted to the purpose intended, and can be carried in the pocket, and kept clean and ready for use at any time.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, is-
A pocket-eraser, consisting of the case A, with the rubber R', arranged to slide therein, substantially as described, as a'new article of manufacture.
Y SAMUEL D. llOVEY.
