ATTACHMENT FOR WEARING-APPAREL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
Application filed February 23, 1909. Serial No. 479,478.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM GOLDBERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Wearing-Apparel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de-- scription. I
This invention relates to attachments for wearing apparel, and more particularly to an attachment for use in connection with skirts, petticoats, drawers and the like, to alter the waste measurements of the garments, and comprises a member adapted to be inserted in the draw string pocket of the garment, and having a flexible strap permanently associated with the member at one end and adapted to be removably, secured at its other end to the member, so that the material of the garment can be gathered and can be held gathered upon the member. Two of the attachments are preferably employed with each garment, and have means for removably attaching one to the other at the placket opening of the garment.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and durable attachment for use with various kinds of wearing apparel, by means of which the waist dimensions of the garments can be altered to adapt them for use by persons having different waist measurements, which obviates the use of a draw string, which requires no alteration whatever in the garment to permit its use in connection therewith, and which is inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a' rear elevation of a part of a garment showing an embodiment of my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an. enlarged elevation of one of the attachments, showing the same removed from the garment; Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the device showing a part in difierent position in dotted outline; Fig. 4 is an enlarged partial section of a portion of the device showing a detail; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged edge elevation of parts of two of the attachments, showing them secured together by means of a hook and eye connection.
Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention, it should be clearly understood, that the same can be used with different kinds of wearing apparel to vary the waist dimensions of the garments, and thereby to adapt the garment for use by persons of different sizes. By means of the attachment a garment can be gathered at the waist, and can be held gathered. The attachment at the same time provides means for securing the placket edges together, and thus obviates the necessity of the draw string.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I provide a flat sleeve 10 fashioned from thin-sheet metal or any other suitable material, and having the sides inwardly disposed at one end to form stops 11 and therebetween an opening 12. An extension member or shank 13 has an enlarged part 14: slidably located within the'sleeve and it is adapted to be projected from the sleeve as is shown most clearly in Figs. 2, 8 and 4. The stops ll prevent the extension shank from being drawn entirely from the sleeve, as is shown most clearly in Fig. 4. The part 14; is of sulficient length to guide the extension shank smoothly within the sleeve and to prevent its binding when being projected or retracted. At the free end, the shank has a button 15, the head 16 of which extends forwardly beyond the stem 17 the latter being suitably curved, and being flush with the rear edge of the head, to permit the body to be drawn easily from the draw string pocket.
At the end remote from the shank extension, the sleeve 10 has secured thereto, in any suitable manner, a member 18 fashioned from folded metal or the like and preferably of angular form so that a part of the member can be secured at the under side of the sleeve, while the remainder extends at right angles thereto. The member adjacent to the sleeve has a bearing 19 in which is loosely mounted an elongated link 20 to which is secured one end of a strap 21. The latter is flexible, and, if so desired, may be elastic. It is partly doubled and has an adjusting buckle 22 of any suitable form, by means of which its length can be varied. At the free end, the strap carries a grip loop 23 of the usual form, having an enlarged entrance opening 21 which has an extended constricted part 25. By means of the loop 23 the strap can be removably secured to the button 15. The member 18 has an opening and thus forms an eye adapted to be engaged by a hook 26 carried by a similar the placket opening of the garment.
usual manner.
The attachment when in use, has the body which comprises the sleeve 10 and the extension shank 13 inserted in the draw string pocket A of the garment B, at the placket opening of the pocket. The material can be gathered upon the body to adjust the waist of the garment, and when sufficient material has been gathered'the grip loop is slipped upon the button, over the material, in the To prevent the material from slipping through the grip loop I provide the latter, at the constricted end with an inwardly disposed spur 30 adapted to seat'in a recess 31 in the stem of the button. This spur may be sharp pointed or rounded, and is preferably of the latter form, as injury to the material is thereby obviated. The button 15 may be mounted at the end of the shank in any suitable manner, and if so desired, maybe formed integral therewith. If so desired, the sleeve may be provided at the inside with a suitable spring member, tending normally to retract the extension shank.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An attachment of the class described, comprising a body adapted to enter the draw string pocket of a garment, and a strap per manently associated with said body and having a part adapted to attach removably to said body, whereby the garment can be held gathered upon said body.

An attachment of the class described, comprising an extensible body adapted to be inserted in the draw string pocket of a garment, an elastic strap connected near one end with said body, and having means for removably attaching at the other end to said body when the same is in place within the pocket, whereby the material of the garmentcan be held gathered u on said body.
.4. An attachment 0 the class described, comprising a sleeve, an extensible shank carried by said sleeve, said sleeve being adapted to be inserted in the draw string pocket of a garment, said shank at the end having a button, and an elastic strap secured having secured thereto at the projecting end 3 an elastic strap, and a loop connected with said strap and adapted to engage said button to hold the garment material covering said button in position, whereby the garment material can be held gathered upon said body.
