Description

Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
INVENTOH W/T/VESSES By Mk6; Arrowrs JOHN nowsme, or NEW YORK, n. Y.
ADVERTISING DEVICE Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Oct. 26, 1 909.
Application filed September 28, 1908. Serial No. 455,008.
to-attracting the attention of the public to a particular candidate.
More. particularly stated, my invention comprises a combinational device partaking,
to some. extent, of the characteristics of a walking cane, a ti re or portion thereof representing a can idate and adapted to be mounted upon the cane for-use as a ha die, this figure being hollow and provided with means whereby it may be used as a/horn;
the figure being detachable from the cane in order to be sounded independently of the cane.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a View partly in elevation and partly in section, showing my complete device, and also showin the manner 1n which the fi ure is'cdnncctet with the cane portion,
and fiirther showing how the figure is provided with a siren and mouthpiece for the purpose of producing sounds in order to attract attention; Fig. 2 is an end view of the tubular member used as a cane; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentaryclcvatiou showing how the figure is'mounted upon the tubular member by aid of a bayonet: joint. 0
A tubular member 4 open at its bottom end 5 has generally the form of a walking cane and is provided at its upper end with two bayonet slots 6. I
A figure 7, representing preferably the head and face of a politician, is provided with a tubular portion 8 fitting neatly into the tubular member 4 and provided '"Wll'll pins 9' -which extend outwardly through the bayonet slots 6. The figure 7 is provided with a wall 10 which is engaged squarely bythe upper end of the tubuiar member 4. A mouthpiece 11 extendst-hrough the top of the figure and is provided inside of the figure with an enlarged portion 12 supporting a fan 13. Adjacent to this fan are slots 14, the casing. provided with its slots and, the fan together constituting a siren. By blowing into the mouthpiece 11, the siren makes its characteristic sound.
The operation of my device is as follows: The parts being assembled as indicated 'in Fig. l, the operator grasps the figure 7 with his hand and uses the entire device somewhat after the manner of an ordinary walking cane. If, now, he desires to sound the siren, he places the mouthpiece ll in his mouth and gives a hard blow. The tubular member 4 now serves as a pipe and the note emitted by the siren has a definite relation to the length of the pipe, as would be the case in an organ pipe. ator desires that'the siren shall produce a sound having greater shrillnes's, he detaches the tubular member 4 from the figure 7, again places themouthpiece 11 in his mouth and blows. The tubular member 4 having been detached, as just stated, the length of the air column is correspondingly decreased, the result being that, as is well known in music, the note is higher. If desired, the parts can be so proportioned that the higher note is exactly an octave, or a multiple of an octave,
figure is attached to or detached from said tubular member. v
2. The combination of an open ended inembcr adapted for use as a cane, a hollow figure removal'ily mounted upon said tubular member and serving as a handle for said cane, and a musical mci'nber carried by said figure and (-o-acting therewith for the urpose of producing-a sound, the proportions of said figure relatively to said tubular member being such that the sound produced when said tubular member is disconnected from sai figure has a definite harmonic relation to the soundemit'ted when said tubular member is connected With said figure.
3. The combination of an open ended tubular member of cylindrical form, a figure detachably connected with said tubular member and made hollow, a mouthpiece for said figure, and a siren connected With said mouthpiece and disposed Within said figure."
bular member of cylindrical form, a figure carried by said tubular member by a bayonet joint for the purpose of rendering said figure easily detachable from said tubular unember, and a sounding device connected with said figure and controllable b the operator for producing noises di ering in character accordingly as said figure may be connected with said open ended tubular member or disconnected therefrom.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN E. DoWsIue. \Vitnesses CHAS. J. KEARNEY, A. GEO. HUDSON.
