Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 9, 1909. Serial No. 488,903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER HIGGINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waverly, in the county of Union and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Gate-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges for gates.
The object of the invention is to provide improved bearings for the gate whereby the actuation of the same is facilitated.
A further object is to provide bearings which can be readily adjusted upon the gate so as to permit said gate to be conveniently balanced while the parts are being adjusted.
WVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is an elevation of a gate embodying the present improvements, said gate belng shown partly open. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hinged members of the gate, same being shown separate.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a gate post to the upper portion of which is secured a metal strap 2 having one end portion extended at an angle therefrom as indicated at 3, said end portion being given a one-quarter twist and provided adjacent its end with an apertured bore. This aperture is designed to receive a pintle 5 extending upwardly from a sleeve 6 which is slidably mounted on the upper bar 7 of the gate. This upper bar is preferably formed of a metal tube. The sleeve 6 has a tubular extension 8 projecting downwardly therefrom and screwed into this extension is a tube 9 the lower end of which fits within an extension 10 extending upwardly from a sleeve 11 which is adjustably mounted on the lower bar 12 of the gate. A pintle 13 extends downwardly from the sleeve 11 and is designed to bear within a socket 14 formed within a boss 15 upstanding from a plate 16. This plate is formed with a series of apertures 17 designed to receive fastening means for the purpose of securing the plate to a base-board or other supporting structure. Each of the sleeves 6 and 11 is provided with a set screw 18 whereby said sleeve may be secured in any position to which it may be adjusted upon the bars 7 or 12.
The gate used in connection with the hinge can be of any preferred construction, such, for example, as shown in Fig. 1, wherein, a guide rod 19 is shown connected to one end of the gate and engaged by a weight-controlled sleeve 20. By lifting the sleeve by means of a lever 32 and cable 35, the gate can be swung in one direction while, by permitting the sleeve to move downward, the gate will be moved in the opposite direction. This structure does not constitute a part of the present invention. The gate hinge shown in detail in Fi 2 constitutes very simple, durable and e cient means for supporting the gate and is advantageous because the sleeves 6 and 11 can be adjusted along the top and bottom portions 7 and 12 of the gate so as to properly balance said gate.
Obviously various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of the invention.
What is claimed is r 1. The combination with a post and a fixed hinge member outstanding therefrom and having an aperture therein, of a socketed bearing member disposed adjacent the base of the post, a gate interposed between said bearing members, connected sleeves simultaneously movable in the same direction upon the gate and along parallel lines, and pintles outstanding from the sleeves and bearing within the respective bearing members.
2. In a gate a hinge member comprising parallel sleeves, oppositely extending alining pintles thereon, separate locking means carried by each sleeve, and a rigid connection between the sleeves.
