To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY JAMES CoLLis, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Wristbands, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to wrist bands,` and it has special relation to bands of this character which are designed for use in athletic sports. v
The object of my invention is to provide an improved wrist band which will be eectively adaptable for use upon the wrists of athletes for strengthening and protective purposes, and which, while retaining its soft and smooth characteristics will be braced and stifened so that it will definitely lbrace and compress the wrist and retain its normal operative structure without wrinkling and also be adjustable to various degrees 'of compression as desired.
A further object of my improvements is to provide a wrist band. having the leadingv characteristics above set forth, but which will be exceedingly simple and-inexpensive in construction and will furthermore possess advantages in point of ease and comfort, convenience, adaptability, efectiveness and general eiciency.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved wrist band in operative position upon the wrist. Fig. 2 is an outside face view of the device when opened. Fig. 3 is an inside face view, 'vcorresponding to Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a detail transverse sectional view, taken on the line ca -m, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view, taken on the line 3/-g/, Fig. 3.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the device, which in its plan contour is so shaped that it will simulate a somewhat conical tubular inclosure when it surrounds the wrist of the wearer. In thus adapting the body of the device to the shape and characteristics of the wrist, the top edge, 2, of the body 1 is preferably curved longitudinally on a somewhat convex line, while the bottom edge, 3, is correspondingly curved longitudinally on a concave line, and the terminal edges, 4 and 5, respectively, extend on a straight convergent line from the top edge 2 to the bottom 'edge 3, whereby the area of the body is larger at its top portion v than at the bottom.
The body-portion 1 is constructed of soft pliable material, such as leather or a suitable fabric, and it comprises an outer orv face strip, 6, preferably in a single piece, and also an inside face stripe7, which preferably corresponds in shape and area to the outer face strip 6 and likewise is in a single piece. The inside face strip 7 contacts with the wristof the wearer, and is therefore preferably constructed of softer material than the outer face strip 6, for instance chamois-skin or a soft fabric or material. The strips 6 and 7, constituting the soft pliable body of the device, are secured together at their corresponding edges, preferably by stitching, as at 8.' v
The body-portion 1 is provided with stiening media, 9,v conveniently arranged between the outer face strip 6 and the soft inside face strip 7 so that it does not directly contact with thepwrist of the wearer. The stiening media is preferably in the form of a series of strips extending approximately from the bottom edge 3`to the top edge 2 and in radial arrangement, as shown. The contour Vofthebody-portion 1 as above described, with relation to the stiffening media '9 radiating in position from the bottom edge 3, brings the outermost elements of the media 9 in parallel position with relation to the convergent terminal edges 4:' and 5 of the body 1 and affords a uniforml positional arrangement and location ofthe stiening mediawi'th respect to the taper of the wrist when the device is in the approximately conical shape which it assumes when placed in position upon the wrist of the wearer, and this relative construction and arrangement also distributes the stiffening media over the full surface area of the body-portion 1. The stiifening media maybe secured inside the soft inner face strip 7 in any suitable manner, preferably by stitching, as at 10, through both the strips 7 and 6 and at the sides of the individual elements of the stiffening media 9.
At the meeting edges 1 and 5 of the body 1, fasteningmeans are provided for securing the device in position. The fastening means preferably comprises buckles, 11, at one edge, engaged by straps, 12, at the other edge, whereby the degree of compression of the device upon the wrist can be conveniently adjusted asdesired according tothe conditions and circumstances of use; and in the preferred arrangement of this fastening'v face strip 7, so that they surround a cross-- bar of the buckle and thus secure the latter in position, the inner ends of said extensions 14 being secured in any suitable manner, preferably by stitching, as at'15, and at the opposite edge i the straps 12 are formed by integral extensions of the soft flexible body. An'interior fiap, 16, is provided and extends beneath the fastening means at the meeting edges l and 5 of the body 1. This flap is constructed of soft pliable material, such as leather or a suitable fabric, and it is secured'in position at one of its side edges. It is desirable, with the fiap thus secured at its side edge, in a flexible wrist band of the character comprised in my invention, to have a smooth flat surface at the secured edge of.
the flap, for comfort in wearing and to prevent exposed edges at the interior surface of the band during the compression of the wrist. The flap 16 is therefore preferably secured by having its inner edge, 17, inserted in a slit, 18, in the inside face strip 7, so that said edge 17 is received between said inside face strip 7 and the outer face strip G, and the inserted edge may be effectively secured by stitching, as at 19, thus producing a smooth continuous inside surface of the wrist band when the latter is secured in position upon the wrist. The slit 18 is adjacent to one of the terminal ends of the body 1, preferably the terminal edge l having the straps 12, and the slit is parallel to the convergent plane of said edge 4, whereby an effective positional arrangement of the flap 16 with respect to the conical positional shape of the wrist band is secured.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those familiar with athletic sports and the uses for which bands of this character are intended. The improved construction is designed to provide the maximum of comfort, convenience and simplicity, and to enable the adjustment of the device with the desired degree of compression under conditions and circumstances of use and with conformity to the shape and size of the wrist, notwithstanding the brace and stiffened character of the body-portion.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent: Y 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a wrist band of the character described, consisting of a flexible body in strip form constitutedV by inner and outer face strips and curved to produce a uniform width throughout on radial lines extending from its bottom edge to its top edge, and having stiffening'media arranged within said body on said K yradial lines and provided with fastening means Vat the meeting edges ofV said body, Y

As an improved article'of manufacture, a Wristband of the character described, consisting Vof a flexible body in strip lfoi-inconstituted byV inner and outer face strips and curved to produce a uniform width throughout on radial lines extending from its bottom edge to its topVv edge, said uniformwidth body having its top edge extending longitudinally and continuously on a convex soV line and its bottom edge extending longiarea longitudinally at its top portion with relationvto its bottom portion, and having stiffening media arranged within said body 'on' said radial lines, and provided with fastening means at the meeting edges of said body, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. As an improved article of manufacture,
a wrist band of the class described, Vhaving a flexible vbody-portion consisting of an inner and outer face strip, said body having a larger area at its top portionthan at theV bottom, stiffening media consisting of individual elements secured between the inner and outer face strips and radiatingfrom the lower edge of the body-portion', fastening means at the meeting edges of the bodyportion, and a flap having its sideedge se-` cured between the inner and 'outer face stripsv and underlying said fastening means. 5. As an improvedarticle of manufacture, a wrist band of the class described, having-a flexible body-portion consisting of inner and outer face strips, said body-portion yhaving its top edge curved longitudinally on a convex line and its bottoml edge curved longitudinally on a concave line and its terminal edges extending on a convergent line from the top edge to the bottom edge, stilfening media consisting of individual elements secured between the inner and outer face strips and radiating from the lower edge of the body-portion, fastening means at the meeting edges of the body-portion, and a flap having its side edge inserted in a slit in the inner face strip parallel with one of the convergent terminal edges of the body and secured between the inner and outer face strips and underlying said fastening means.
6. As an improved article of manufacture, a wrist band of the character described, consisting of a flexible body in strip form constituted by inner and outer face strips curved to produce a uniform width throughout on radial lines extending from its bottom edge to its top edge and carrying stiflening media, said uniform-width body having its terminal edges of a length corresponding to said uniform width and respectively on a convergent line extending from the to edge to the bottom edge, whereby the body as an increased area longitudinally at its top portion with relation to its bottom portion, and having integral extensions from one of said body-strips at one of said` convergent terminal edges and carrying fastening devices and integral extensions from said body-strip at the other terminal convergent edge for engaging said fastening devices, and having an inner flap underlying said fastening means, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. As an improved article of manufacture, a wrist band of the class described, having a flexible body-portion consisting of an inner and outer face strip, the terminal edges of the body being on a convergent line from the top to the bottom, whereby the area ofthe body is larger at its top portion than at the bottom, stiffening media arranged within the body-portion and radiating from the lower edge of the body-portion, extensions at one of the terminal edges carrying fastening devices, extensions at the other terminal edge for engaging said fastening devices, and an inner flap having its side edge inserted in a slit in the inner face strip and secured between the inner and outer face strips and underlying said terminal edges.

As an improved article of manufacture, a wrist band of the class described, having a flexible body-portion in strip form consisting of corresponding inner and outer face strips, said body-portion having its top edge curved longitudinally on a convex line and its bottom edge curved longitudinally on a concave line and its terminal edges extending on convergent lines from the top edge to the bottom edge and being of approximately uniform width between its top and bottom edge throughout its length from one terminal ed e to the other terminal edge, whereby sai body-portion is of larger area at its top portion than at its bottom portion, stiifening media consisting of individual elements secured between the inner and outer face strips and radiating from the lower edge of the body-portion and of approximately corresponding uniform length with relation to the approximately uniform width of the strip constituting the body-portion, and fastening means at the convergent terminal edge portions, whereby when the device is in operative position upon the wrist the top and bottom edges are parallel and the body strip and stiifening media are in uniform tapering positional arrangement and location with respect to the taper of the wrist.
