Application filed October l0, 1903.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patenten oet. ie, ieee.'
Serial No. 457,065.
To @il whom ir may concern:
Be 1t 1Known that l, Lotus A. VIEDEMAN,
l a citizen ot' the United States, and a residevice which is simple in construction, durable and which can be easily attached to tile table.
-ther objects and advantages will appear .inthe following'specification and will be particularly pointed out in the annexed claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a section of a table with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section on the line 2 2 ot` Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail plan View of the device.
Referring now to the drawings l havel 'shown therein a table slide composed ot three pieces of stamped sheet metal. These pieces consistof the two side pieces A and B and the center piece C. It will be understood, that While I have shown the slide consisting or" the threea pieces mentioned it may'consist of more than three as will be hereinafter pointed out. rlhe two outer pieces A and are formed of a single piece of sheet metal which is stamped or pressed in the -shape indicated in section in Fig. 2. The part consists of an upper part a provided with a downwardly turned stidening fla-nge a2 on one side, and on the other with a downwardly extending side portion 'a3 having an upwardly and then downwardly bent portion at with an inwar ly curved portion a? lying between said bent portion zt and a similar bentportion o6. The side piece terminates in a downwardly 'extending portion a7. The part A is arranged to be secured to the underside of one portion ot a table top by means of the screws F. The part B is ,of somewhat similar const-ruotion to the part A, the portion b4 and Z however, are bent so as to form rooves facing each other instead of turne away i Fig. .5.
is punched in the manner shown in Fig. Q
from each other as in the oase of the similarly bent portions u* and a7 of the said piece A. Moreover the central portion o is straight instead ot beingr curved.- rlhe central portion C consists of a rectangular tube haviing` a side c similar to the slide B and adapted to engage the slide A, and a side c2 similar to the slide t and adapted to engage the slide lil. The two side portions which l have denoted in general by c and are joined at their bottom by the connectiuer piece c which forms a base member and which provided with openings YG tor the reception of the screws .l which seeurev the bottom ot the central slide member C to the table legv l. The upper portion et ot the central slide member C is provided with a longitudinal slot o5 the purpose of uhirh is to permit the entrance of a screwdriver or other'tool tor securing the slide to the table leg.
The three slides are li 'st assembled by` placing the bent flange portions in line with the respeetive slots formed by the bent portionsot' the central slide member and then closingI the slides in the manner indicated in After this is done each of the slides to provide the engaging stop port-ions s', s2,
s and a" thereby preventing the withdrawall ot the side portions, while permitting them to slide -treclynpon therentral portion within the limits ot the stop members as shown in Fig. l. I
l-laving 'tous described the various parts the operation of the device will be readily understood. tastened tothe respective halves D and D of the table in the -nianner already explained, while the central portion is fastened to the center leg l. Villien the sides D and D are pulled apart the side pieces will slide relatively to the center piece, the latter remainliner practically in its normal position. The table may be extended until the stop members on the slides engage the end stop members on the central portion C. The intervening leaves may then be inserted and will rest upon the upper-parts af, o of the slide. y
l am aware that other forms of the device based upon the same general idea might be maden but l consider as my own Iand desire to claim all such modifications as fanly tall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
The side pieces A and B are llt:
I claim:
l. In a table slide, a central member comprising a .tlat piece of sheet metal bent into rectangular form, the top portion being provided with a longitudinal Slot, one oi' the .side portions being bent back upon itself to provide grooves and being curved inwardl)7 't its central portion, and the other Hide portion being bent baclt upon itself to provide llanges, side members each consisting of a single strip. having portionsA bent: back upon themselves to constitute flanges` and grooves arranged to slidingly engage the grooves and llanges on said central member. and stop members consisting of portions punched from said central and side menibers, said punched portions extending laterA ally and those ot the central mem r being adapted to engage those of the side members to limit the sliding movement of said side members relatively to said central member.
2. ln a table slide, cent-ral membery comprising a tlat piece of sheet metal bent into rectangular form, one of the side portions l l I l l l t l l l being bent back upon vitself to4 provide grooves, and being curved inwardly at its central portion, and the other side portion being bent back upon itself to provide {lang-es, side members, each consisting of a single strip of substantially L-shaped cross section, the longer portion of the section bing` bent back upon itself to constitute flanges and grooves arranged to slidably engage the grooves and flanges on. said eentral member, the shorter portion of the sec tion being adapted to lie underneath and be attached to the table, and stop members consisting` ol' ortions punched from said central and lside members. said punched portionsl extending laterally and those olE the central member being adapted to engage those ot' the side members to limit the more ment ol' said side members relative to said central meniber.
