ATTORNEYS WITNESSES ERNEST OLDENIBUSCI-I, OF NEW YORK, 1\T.Y.
COMBINED MATCH-BOX AND CIGAR-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed. May 25, 1909. Serial No. 498,178.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ERNnsr OLDENBUSGH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gombined Match-Box and Cigar- Cutter, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in match boxes, and more particularly to a form of match box adapted to receive a card or package of detachably connected friction matches.
My improved box is formed of two sections movable in respect to each other, and one of them so formed as to frictionally retain the package or card of matches in engagement therewith independently of the other section of the box which constitutes the cover. My improved box contains many new and useful features which may all be combined in the same structure, or certain of the features may be utilized independently of others. A box constructed to embody all of the features of my invention has one end thereof of slightly greater thickness than the other end, so as to provide for the heads of the matches. The two box sections, that is, the match carrier and the cover, are pivotally connected together at one end and the same pivot pin which connects the two box sections also serves as the pivotal support or the blade of a cigar cutter. A portion of the box cover is pressed inwardly to lie in a lower plane than the adjacent portion of the cover, and at the line of intersection between these portions, there is provided a slot or opening through which the cutter blade extends, so that the blade lies in a plane parallel to the plane of the cover, and a portion of the blade contacts with one surface of the cover and the remainder of the blade.
contacts with the opposite surface of the cover, whereby the blade is prevented from vbending or moving away from the adjacent "coacting part of the cover during the cutting action. Other features of the invention will be set forth more fully hereinafter and particularly pointedout in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the box in its open position and showing the cutter blade drawn out ready for use; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the box in its closed position and showing a package or card of matches in dotted lines; Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the box on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, the face portion of the match pocket being shown in solid lines; and Fig. 4 is aperspective view of the box in its closed position.
The specific form of. box illustrated is constructed of metal and includes two parts or sections, one of which constitutes the box body and receives and retains the package or card of matches and the other of which constitutes the box cover and carries the cigar cutter. The box body includes a back or base plate 10, of substantially the size of the box and provided with means for retaining the package of matches in engagement therewith. The special form of package for which my box is designed, includes a plurality of sheets A, of thick paper or the like, connected together at one end, and each split or separated into a plurality of matches B at the opposite end. The sheets forming the matches are secured to, a paper base or back C, which latter is folded over the sheets A at the ends opposite to the heads of the matches, to form a short front plate or cover D, which serves to retain all of the matches together,
and which presents a friction face upon which the matches may be scratched.
The base or back plate 10 of the box body is of a width substantially equal to the width of the back C of the match package, and is of a length slightly greater than the length of the match package. The back is provided with a side wall 11, extending longitudinally thereof, and of a width approximately equal to the thickness of the box. The back 10, at one end, carries a curved transverse wall 12, forming the end of the box, and at the edge of the back 10 opposite to the. side wall 11, I provide a short side Wall 13 extending only approximately onehalf the distance from the end wall 12 to the opposite end of the box. The box body is thus open at the top across one end and along approximately one-half of one side.
The two side walls 11 and 13 are spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the width of the package of matches, and are so formed that the package may be moved longitudinally into place and frictionally retained there. The side walls 11 and 13 may be constructed in any suitable manner to frictionally retain the package, as, for instance, by corrugations, flanges or the like. As illustrated, each of these two side walls has a series of bosses or projections 14, stamped inwardly, so that the package in being moved lengthwise into the box between the side walls, will frictionally engage with these bosses and be prevented from return movement.
The box cover which receives the box body, is formed of back and front walls 15 and 16, connected together by one end wall 17 and one side wall 18. The box andits cover are connected by a pivot pin 19, intermediate the side edges 11 and 13 of the box body and closely adjacent the end wall 12. The end wall 17 of the box cover is opposite to this pivot pin and serves. to close the open end of the box body when the parts are in closed position. The side wall 11 and the end wall 12 of the box body serve to close the open side and the, open end of the box cover. The side wall 11, at the end opposite to the pivot pin, is provided with a lug or projection 20, which extends through an aperture in the end wall 17 a suflicient distance so that it may be engaged by the finger nail to open the box. The end wall 17 is preferably curved in an are having the pivot pin as a center, so that the twov parts fittogether to form a tight closure. As a match package of the character above referred to is of somewhat greater thickness at the head end of the matches than it is at the opposite end, the front wall 16 of the cover is preferably provided with a terminal portion 21 stamped up to slightly increase the thickness. of the box. This. portion 21 may be of substantially uniform width across the end of the box, and have a curved line of demarcation between it and the remainder of the front 16, said line being parallel to the end wall 17.
The cover of the box carries a cigar cutter involving an important feature ofniy invention. The front wall 16 is provided with an aperture 22 adapted to receive the tip of the cigar, and acutter blade 23 is pivoted to the cover, so as to move past this opening and along the inner surface of the cover, to cut off the tip of the cigar inserted through the opening. The pivot pin 19, which holds the cover and box together, also serves as the pivot pin for the cutter blade 23, and the substantially equal to the thickness of the cutter blade. The marginal line of this countersunk portion is curved and lies in the arc of a circle, having the pivot pin 19 for a center, and along a portion of this line of demarcation I provide a slot or opening 25,, through which the cutter blade may extend. The portion of the cutter blade adjacent the pivot pin lies in contact with the outer surface of the countersunk portion 24:. At the rear of this countersunk portion, the cutter blade extends through to the inner surface of the wall 16 and continues in close engagement with said inner surface. The opening 22 is closely adjacent the edge of the countersunk portion, that is, adjacent the slot or opening 25. The blade is positively prevented from springing away from the plate at this slot, and is, therefore, prevented from moving away from the plate opposite the opening 22. j
The blade may be operated in any suitable manner, but it is preferably provided with a lateral extension or arm 26 disposed adjacent the inner surface of the wall 12 and extending through an aperture in the side wall 18. At its outer end, said extension or arm is provided with a flange 2,7, which limits the movement of said arm or extension into the box and serves as a catch by means of which the blade may be moved outwardly to opera-,
t-ive position, as shown in Fig. 1. Said flange also. presents a flat surface against which pressure may be applied in forcing the blade back into position during the cutting of the cigar. I
Various changes may be made in the construction and operation of my improved box and within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent;
