HAND-BARROW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed September 28, 1908. Serial No. 455,070.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM F. F. NnHLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake City, in the county of Wabasha, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Barrows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a hand barrow, more particularly adapted for the purpose of transporting straw or other materials from one locality to the other.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a hand barrow having foldable rigid side sections connected to form a flexible bottom to receive and inclose a load for transporting the same, and means for holding the side sections in a folded position with respect to each other and also for carrying the hand barrow over the shoulder of a person.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a hand barrow including rigid side frames having rope netting connected to the same and drawn taut thereon, the lower extremities of the sections being connected to form a flexible bottom to support a load and upon the folding of the side sections thereon will hold the said load intact for transportation.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described in detail and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention, however, changes, variations and modifications may be made such as come properly within the scope of the claim hereunto appended without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention with the rigid side sections in an open or unfolded position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view with the rigid side sections in a folded or closed position with a load of material ready for transportation. Fig. 3 is a side view. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
In the drawings, the numeral 5 designates generally the hand barrow which includes foldable rigid side sections 6 formed of rigld hoops 7 preferably of wood and bent into semicircular shape to produce the skeleton side sections; Spanning the hoops 7 and connected to the freeends thereof in annular grooves 8 near the free extremitiesof each hoop 7 are longitudinal ropes 9 having connecting flexible end extremities 10 for uniting and spacing the lower extremities of the hoops 7 forming the rigid side sections.
Extending across each rigid side section 6 are ropes 11 which latter are drawn taut and secured to the hoops 7 by terminal loops 12 surrounding the same. To the ropes 11 and 9 respectively are connected transversely disposed ropes 13 having terminal loops 14 engaging and surrounding the hoops 7 of the rigid side sections. These transversely disposed ropes 13 at their point of intersection in the space between the ropes 9 and flexible end connections 10 form flexible connections 15 to produce a united flexible bottom with the side sections for supporting a load of material upon the closing or folding of the said side sections with respect to each other.
Connected to one of the hoops 7 at a point intermediate its free end is a flexible holding member such as a strap or rope 16 which is adapted to be twisted around the other hoop 7 upon the folding or closing of the said hoop whereby the same will be held in a closed position so as to inclose the load between the rigid side sections for transportation. This holding member 16 at its opposite free end may be drawn over the shoulder of a person so that the hand barrow may be carried on the back of said person.
WVhat is claimed is A hand barrow of the class described comprising semicircular shaped rigid hoops, each provided near the ends thereof with annular grooves, ropes spanning said hoops and connected to the same in said annular grooves and having flexible end extremities uniting the hoops in spaced relation to each other, and a rope netting connected to the hoops and to the first-mentioned ropes to form flexible sides and a bottom.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WILHELM F. F. NEI-ILS.
