raten Application filed-February 2, i909. Serial No. 475,589.-
To all rah/om it may concern:
. Be it known that I, Ebwnnn ALFRED Gin"- HAM, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Brockley, in the g openings in the top and bottom of the casing so that the latter is at these parts water-" county of London, England, have invented Improvements in or Relating to Electric:
Bells, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to electric bells of the kind in which the strikingmechanism comprises a striker constituted as a movable magnetic element adapted tobedirectly influenced by the electro-magneticy element in such manner that the striking of the bell is effected by momentum of the magnetic element'acquired upon excitation .of the electro-magnetic elements and damping of the bell vibrations or rebound of the striker is prevented by the combined action on the striker ofgravityand'that of the electro-magnetic device aided or not by asprin'.
g Y The object of the present invention isto generally improve the construction .of such a pletely protected against moisture and so that the parts which are exposed shall be unj enamel, or'; be otherwise treated so that alfected thereby.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel arts removed, Fig. 2 a'central vertical sectlon on the line A of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 an underside view,
is a front elevation with A of a sin 10 stroke bell. Figs. 4 and 5 are front e ovations, showin modifications. Fig. 6 is a detail view, p..rt'ly in section,
showing a further modification; Fig. 7 is a cross section of a modified fdrm of striker.
AS shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a skeleton frame a is employed having a rim the upper portion 12 of which is appnoximately semic lindric'al and of an interfial'r'adius greater than the radius correspondihg to the external diameter of the gong :0 so that the. said gon is partially surrounded thereby, while the ower'portion 6 of the rim, also of ap proximately semicylindrical form, is of lesser Width than the portion Z9" but -"corresp onds .substantially in dimensions to the edge of the gong c. The frame a may he supported in any convenient way,'lugs (,1 being shown on the rim portions 1), b for this purpose.
The gong c is carried by acasing esecu ed, as by screws'e 'to the fra'ame a, the attachment of the gong c to the casings being efiected by a screvv c 'enteringjalug orprojection e on the casing. The casing e serves bell so that the electrical parts arecn'uefl Ito messes solenoid f which may convenin turn sweated into correspondingly shaped i tight. The casing (2 also constitutes a terminal chamber c that is fitted-twith a Watertight cover 6' andv a watertight gland e to which for example a lead, sheathed cable 2' i passing therethrough can be soldered. The terminal chamber c contains a block 7' of insulating material to which are secured two metal terminal blocks is, k the ends of the solenoid winding 7 being attached thereto by the two conductors n n of the cable 2' similarly attached by the screws n a The solenoid is provided' with a combined solenoid'co1'eand'gong. Striker 0 that may advantageoiisly. be'madehollow with a rounded head-0 andjlie sheathed, asby ele'ctro-deposiheri cactiom sfuchIfor-exanlple as copper; or, alternativelyg'be coated with an appropriate composition, such .for example as vitrified there shall be no liability of the core sticking in the tube 9 by reason of rust or other deposit. .To act as a support for the core enoid f when the latter is denergized, a flanged tube 7) of copper or similar metal proper-operative position relative to the sothe current.

'5. An electric bell, comprising a gong, a solenoid having its axis vertically arran 'ed, a tube extending through said solenoi a casing surrounding said Windin ,cheeks-into which the tube 1s sweated an themselves sweated into the said casing, a tennmal chamber forming part of said casing, a
rectly striking the (gong 0, may, as shown in Fig. 4:, be arrange to act against a striker head 0 which is arran ed to slide within a bearing 0 and is maintained normally out .5 of contact with the gong and seated upon its bearing 0 by a spring 0 the. arrangement being such that when the core 0, after having acquired momentum, forces the head,
' against the influence of the spring 0 into 10 contact with the gong, the spring assists the combined action of gravity and the solenoid in producing return movement of the striker. As will be obvious, in lieu of arranging the parts Within the gong as illustrated, the
15 gong might be located to be struck exteriorly, as shown in Fig. 5, Where the luge for the gong c is formed'upon the frame a and the latter extended as at a to support the casing 6. Also, in either of such arrangements, any
as ordinary contact maker and breaker or cir cuit interrupter might be employed to convert the bell from a single stroke into a vi- I brating bell, the same being either inclosed,
as shownat r in Fig. 6 in the Water tight casing e, or in a separatecasing as diagrammatlcally indicated at s m'F 1g. 1. As will also be obvious, the construction of the elements may be modified without departing from the scope of the invention, as for inwatertight gland through which" the leads to, the solenoio. pass into the chamber, a magnetizable striker vertically movable throughthe said tube and a perforated tube almed normally supported. I
