'WILLIAM J. soi-IWEIGER, oF NEW YOK, N. Y., AssIeNoR or ONE-HALF To HERMANN APFELBAUM, or SAME PLACE.
ELECTRIC BELL.
SPECIFICATION fer-ming part o1 Letters Patent No. 509,050, dated November 21, 189e.
Appneeuen inea Meren 15, 189s.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it kuownthat LWILLIAM J. SCHWEIGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New 5 York, haveinventedanewandusefullmprovement in Electric Bells,of which the following is a specification.
` I Will describe an electric bell embodyin-g my improvement, and then point out the ro novel features in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l, illustrates an electric bell containing my improvement, the dome of the bell being omitted. Fig. 2, is a sectional view thereof. Fig.
3, is an exterior view of the same, and Fig. et,
shows a blank from which the armature portion of the bell is formed.
' A is a circularl lease-plate having an annular rim on its upper and lower sides, and is sezo cured to a Wall or other support, by screws a. ct' is an opening in the base plate, for the passage of electric wires to the binding postsv a2 a3, the post d2, being insulated, and the l other cast integral with the base-plate.
B B are magnets secured to a lug, a4, extending from the base-plate, and castintegral therewith.
C is an armature secured to a resilient spring, c, attached to a lug, a5, of the baseplate. This armature is provided With an arm, c2, having a hammer, c arranged to act on the exterior of the dome D. The arm c2, is bent suiiiciently at c3, to pass beneath the rim of the dome and vibrate Within a notch,
a6, formed in the upper rim a7, of the baseplate. If desired, the armature With its arm and hammer may be stamped out from a plate of sheet metal, as shown in Fig. 4, and the arm afterward bent at right-angles to the ar- 4o mature approximately.
E is a make and break contact devicecomprising the spring c, resting against 'an adjustable and insulated screw e', in a post, 0,9, and in electrical connection with the magnets B B, and binding post a2, by means of the wire e2. The spring c, is in electrical connection with the binding post a3, by means of the wire e3. Single stroke mechanism, in lieu of vibrating mechanism may be employed if de-l pact in arrangement of parts.
Serial No. 4616,168. Y (No model.)
sired. Thecdome D, has its rim arranged in 5o close proximity with the rim a7, of the baseplate, and the magnets, armature and contact breaking mechanism, are Wholly inclosed within the dome of the said bell. This dome is detachadly secured to a post, a8, integral with the base-plate. By this construction I provide a bell, neat in appearance, and com- The hammer is arranged to operate on the exterior of the bell, and the Working parts are wholly in- 6o inclosed Within the dome of the bell, Whereby a louder tone is obtained, and dust and other substances tending to imp air the efliciency of the bell, are prevented from obtaining access to the interior parts thereof.
I clairn- 1. In an electric bell, the combination, ofa base plate provided with an annular rim, a dome having its rim arranged in close proximity to that of the base plate, an armature 7o having an arm provided with a hammer arranged to act on the exterior of the dome, the said arm being adapted to vibrate within a notch contained in the rim of the base-plate, substantiallyV as described.`
2. In an electric bell, the combination of a circular base plate having a rim on its upper and lower sides, magnets secured to a lug integral With thebase plate, an armature therefor, provided with a hammer arranged to act 8o on the exterior of the bell, and connected to the armature by an arm adaptedto vibrate within a notch in the adjacent rim of the base plate, and a dome detachably secured to a .post integral with the base plate, and having 8 5 its rim arranged inclose proximity with the adjacent rim of the base plate, and wholly inclosing the mechanism operating the hammer, substantially as described.
3. In an electric bell, as described, the cir- 9o cular base plate A, having an opening, a', for the passage of electric wires to binding posts within the dome of the bell, the said plate having the annular rims on its upper and lower sides, the post as, lugs a4, a5, a9, and binding post a3, cast integral therewith, substantially as described.
4. In an electric bell as described,an armature C, hammer o', and arm c2 containing they my invention I have signed my name, in presloop c3, comprised in one integral piece of sheet ence of two Witnesses, this 10th day of March, metal, the arm c2 being bent at right angles 1893. approximately to the armature C, and the fiat 5 sides of the latter being in the same piane as the iat sides of the hammer, as speoied.
In testimony that I claim the' foregoing as l WILLIAM J. soi-IWIGER. Witnesses:
E. R. MCCARTY, GEO. WADMAN.
